"Apple" Yellow-sided Green Cheeck Conure
So glad I found this forum... :D I have been thinking about getting a parrot lately and want to do full research before I decide what species. I curretnly have a male Parakeet and have had Cockatiels, Love Birds, Finches, and a Senegal Parrot before. I wasn't sure exactly on how to care for those little guys some passed (Finches) and the others flew away. :( I want to do it the right way now, especially after discovering the wonderful world of forums. I currently belong to a few other forums which include Chameleonforums.com, BP.net, Arachnophiles Anonymous, Arachnoboards, Cornsnakeforum.com, Geckosunlimited.com, and Boaphiles.com (?)... Hope you guys can help me get started. :D

I live in San Diego Ca. but originally from Corcoran Ca. I moved to Tijuana Mex. about 5 years ago, lived there for about a year, became pregnant, then moved back to SD and have been bouncing around from SD to Corcoran a bit, lol! Been here for the past year steadily though.

First question is. Since I live in an apartment, what is a good apartment parrot? Sweet, loving, quiet, and clean? I prefer a medium sized parrot...

Hi & welcome! I'm new here, too. I'll let the other bird people here answer your question about the best parrot for an apartment. The quietest parrots I know of are the parrotlets but they are also the smallest parrot (granted, with big attitudes).

I love my parrots but they are messy creatures! I have some acrylic cages & they definitely help keep the floor clean and keep volumn down. With the wire cages, my birds always manage to kick half their food out onto the floor. :)

Hi! Well thank you for giving me a welcome... Seems like this forum isn't very fond of newcomers. :)

I was actually looking at some Parolettes and they are SO adorable and brightly colored which I love. You said you had some, right? Are they cuddly or do they tend to like to be left alone? Thank you!

Hello, and welcome! This forum loves newcomers, but you have to give some time for a response, as people are all over the globe, so working/awake at various times. Myself, I always give my vote to the green cheek conures. :)

Hehe, no worries! I'm just used to being bombarded by responses on other forums. :D

I absolutely LOVE green cheeks as they are just too darn cute... I do see them at Petsmart and Petco a lot but are WAY too pricey for my budget. I have been told that they tend to be very lound all the time, is this statement true or think that those people just got mouthy ones? Then again, I love parrots so much i'd love to have one of each kind.

Conures and all birds can be loud at times. My green cheek only screams a bit at certain times; first waking up, around bed time (followed by pitiful chirps of objection to bedtime lol), and when he's excited to get out of the cage when we get home.

Oh, and price wise you will pay much more at a pet store than if you find a breeder. I've seen green cheeks in pet stores for two to three times the price of my breeder.

Welcome!
I would recommend either a green cheek or a pionus. Pionus are bigger but they are both pretty quiet. Price wise, Rio Mom is right... Any birds in large pet stores will be higher price. Green cheeks at pet stores are usually around $350, while ones at breeders are usually around $200.

Did you like your Senegal? There are alot of senegals on this forum, they seem to have alot of character & are quiet. (as quiet as a parrot can be). I saw a funny about a "quiet parrot", it was a stuffed parrot doll. lol Good luck w/your search.

Hi - just getting back to you today. Yes, I have two pacific parrotlets but they are bonded to each other and not very people friendly. If you get a hand fed one from a breeder, though, that can be handled. I know someone with a parrotlet that is very tame and cuddles in her hand and rides around in her pocket while she does housework.

I don't know much about the green cheeks although I think I have heard they aren't noisy as the suns & the jendays. I had a neighbor with a sun conure (i live in a house btw) and even with the their windows shut I could hear it calling & calling for him while I was outside doing yard work. LOL

I was just going to ask how you do multiple quotes and then saw the little MQ, I thought "Hm, I wonder what that stands for?" Lol!

That is so cute... My Parakeet is pretty lound and vocal but I love it! My bf on the other hand, hates it but who cares what he thinks, right? :D

I'll be sure and find a breeder if I do decide to go with a Green Cheek. I see plenty of them on Craigslist but i'll search around, thank you!

I have a cage that is on the smaller side so I'm going to have to consider that... It's about 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide. Thank you! :D

I did like him, he was the cutest little thing. :) He wasn't much of a talker and more of a screamer though. Lol! Yeah, I understand that no matter what there is going to be some noise, lol! Maybe i'll get one of those...

That is so cute! *sigh* so many decisions!
