Hey guys, been awhile since I've posted. Me and Toby have bonded wonderfully and life is great with him. I honestly could ask for a better bird. Still trying to adjust his diet but I'm making headway!

Now the dilemma! I'm going on vacation this coming week from Tuesday till late Thursday evening and I have absolutely no idea what to do. The hotel we're staying at doesn't allow pets and I honestly don't trust house keeping enough to leave him a hotel room. The local vet doesn't board birds and none of my family can take him.

What would you guys in my situation?

Thanks in advance!:green:

We were on vacation for a week recently, and I just made sure Midori had plenty of food and water and a window to watch so she didn't get too bored.

I had the petsitter check in on her, but she never had to actually do anything. She still had pellets and water when I got back and was a little upset and puffy at me but after the first hour of being back she was her normal self.

If possible I'd have a trusted friend, family (or in my case, housemates!) run by the house once a day, change food and water and chat with the bird for abit. I'd also leave a radio on so the bird had some noise. If I go away for more then an overnight stay I leave Alex with his breeder. She always loves to see him again, and he's just at home their as he is at my place.

I'll be watching this thread though. I have placement at a school Mondays for my uni course that is 300km away, meaning I'll be travelling down Sun night, staying the night, doing placement and travelling back Mon night to make it back for my 8am lecture on Tues. Alex will be being left alone for less then 24 hours, and my housemates will be here, but still, I worry. :)

This is why I do not take vacations. I do not want to come back home with a sick bird. If you find an avain vet they should board your bird.

it shoud be ok to leave the bird for 2 days

You can probably leave him for the 2 to 3 days, provided you:

a) Leave him plenty of pellets.

b) Leave plenty of water. If he knows how to drink from a water bottle, that would be ideal. If not, get one and try to teach him before you leave. My GCC bathes in his water dish and dunks his pellets in it, so it is a mess by the end of the day and could never be left unchanged for 2 or 3 days. If you can't get him to drink from the bottle, put an extra water dish in his cage and fill it with ice. It should melt by the 2nd day, giving him a clean water supply.

c) Make sure it won't get too hot or cold in the room while you are gone.

d) Put a TV or radio on with a timer to shut it off at night and turn it back on in the morning. This will help keep him company (and as a bonus might keep burgalars away).

e) If possible, haves somone check in on him every day, or at least once (Wednesday afternoon or evening might make sense) and if possible change his water.

You also might find someone who boards bird by searching online, or perhaps through a local parrot/bird club. If you can't find a local to board him, maybe you could find somone near your vacation spot.

Thanks for all the ideas and information guys! I'll be posting with the decision soon. Spiritbird, this is also the reason why I hate taking vacations. I've always hated it because I had to leave my dog but now I have a bird too. It's very stressful, I worry a lot about both of them.

Gonna definitely try the water bottle.
