A/C help!!

Hi all,

I have a green cheek conure parrot named Yoshi. I've had him for a little under 2 years, and we've had on and off issues with our air conditioning unit.

We have central A/C, and the unit is located behind my wall in a dormer enclosed by a door in my room. We know that there is some sort of freon (refrigerant) leak happening either outside by the base unit, or indoors behind my wall at the upstairs unit.

The A/C is not working up to par, and we need to recharge the freon, but I'm afraid that in doing so, it risks the life of my parrot if the leak is indoors and behind my wall.

Any insight, fellow parrot owners? Thank you in advance

The cost of Freon is so crazy high, it may be better to buy an entirely new unit. BTDT

Can he go visit a friend during the repairs? All the Freon leaked out of my newly installed AC unit last summer and I got a terrible headache from it. Luckily there were no birds at that point.

I'd replace the unit or put a small window unit in an available window if replacing the one you have is too expensive.

I can move him to a different room, but no available friend homes unfortunately

They are safe if they work well.

I have a small window a/c unit. It makes it easier to keep bird area ideal temps. Due to room/sun/tree locations the rest of house would be boiling or freezing. There are floor room air units too. These work great but they take up valuable room space. Also if positioned correctly window units drip condensation outside. Room units can*will* drip inside on carpet, flooring very slowly and unnoticed till you smell mold or hear your foot squish!

I have a floor unit, and it collects water in a tub behind it (an old ice cream pail). I love it, but changing out the pail can be a pain, so I only have it on when the weather is unbearable.

Suggestion; I had a floor unit. Then I got tired of draing it! I hooked up a HomeDepot sump pump. Purchased draining tubing hooked from a/c to pump to outside. It worked . Then unit got old and moisture collected somewhere it wasn't supposed to. Then a wet moldy carpet. Plus I was tired of space it occupied. Sadly the unit still cools like a champ. So it's in garage as a backup. (At least until I get tired of it there) HomeDepot and other places sold them at that time for under 50$. They are small and easy to position. I have a dehumidifier in garage. Sump pump drains it into washer wall drain. I put a few tablespoons of vinegar monthly to discourage mold and insects.
