Hi All,

Those of you who have big macaws with long tails ... what kind of carrier do you use to take your macaw for a car ride? I just want to take Chopper for a car ride so he can see things...the carrier I have only has a front view. So, I'm just looking for suggestions.

I have a caique, so I don't have the tail issue, but sometimes I take Pippi in the car with just a harness on instead of putting her in a carrier. Don't know if that would work for you, but it's an idea. :)

My redfront rides in a birdie car seat, or my shoulder. My greenwing rides on my shoulder. I don't use carriers.

I always just have Fargo on his harness on my shoulder, but i am not the one driving! :o

When he goes in a carrier he has a big dog carrier.. It has a perch bolted into it, and it is big enough that his tail doesn't get all messed up! :)

Plus it has holes so he can see out the sides!
Doesn't look very big in pictures, but it is a big carrier!

Usually helps on the way home after a big day, just take his harness off, have the door open and he just takes a nap on his perch! :)

Ok - thanks everyone. I have a dog carrier and I need to put a perch in it but I don't think the holes are big enough for him to see out of the sides. I could do the dog kennel.

I'm pretty sure that at this point in our relationship he isn't going to let me put a harness on him. He won't even let me scritch him yet.

I don't have a macaw but years ago I saw a man in a truck sitting at a red light and he had a macaw on his shoulder. When he started moving, the macaw adjusted himself for the move forward. My first time to see a parrot riding in a car like that but he was used to it, had the routine down.

Now the truck was a late 70s model Chevy so no airbags. I don't let my pets ride in the front because I worry about an accident, especially after having an accident hitting a full size deer. The aftermath with airbags, seatbelts, boy what a mess.

I've seen perched you can hang over the headrest of a seat too, that might be an option too.

Just a heads up. My partner had her mother's LSC2 on the passenger head rest. They were at a standstill due to traffic when they were rear ended. Caused her car to spin and she got hit a second time by the car on the right front panel. The bird slammed into the windshield. IMO it's just as dangerous to have a bird loose in a car as it is to baby in the car without a car seat just holding them. No judgment, just something to think about.

You can get wire dog crates, but I'm not sure what they are made of.
