So, my newly adopted CAG Mariah (had her for a month now) loves to scream like a cockatiel (she used to live with one)....a big-loud cockatiel. She has lovingly passed on this wonderful whistle to my Meyers.....so during their vocalization times, it sounds like our house is a cockatiel motel.
I ignore it for as long as humanly possible but sometimes (like when my daughter is taking a nap) I have to resort to covering her up. I am looking forward to the temps warming up a bit so both of them can have some time outdoors....my Meyers loves it when I wheel his cage out to the front porch! Once outside, I really don't care what types of noises they make!

Is it cruel and unusual punishment to cover her up for a little bit until she settles down? After I uncover her she seems to have forgotten all about the screaming....it should also be noted that it doesn't make a difference whether or not she is in/out of her cage or we are in/out of the room.

Any advice is appreciated!

Well it seems to calm her down. She probably uses the time to rest a bit and take a breather. Some people cover their birds for naps in the daytime. I personally dont think its cruel unless the bird is scared of the cover, which from your post I would conclude that she isnt. Just my two cents :D

My Echo is a big cockatiel too. He is the louder version of my Kodak. When he does this I just figure he's a really expensive cockatiel..

Oh man....at first, I didn't recognize what this insanely loud shrill was....it took me being outside the house and thinking I heard a cockatiel to recognize it! I really don't mind it every now and then but when both of them get going, it's a little tough to handle!
No, she isn't frightened of the cover at all (thank god!)....so far, it seems like the best option to break the cycle.
