A Macaw Summertime Treat

For some time I have observed two of my macaws taking wedges of orange in their mouths and squeezing them while drinking water. This looks like making their own orange juice and they often leave the rind in the water bowl. Last Saturday I had the birds down to the Riverside Arts Market and I was a little parched, so I bought a large lemonade and shared it with Clifford. BOY DID HE EVER LIKE THAT! Tonight I made lemonade (Minute Maid) and shared it with both Cliff and Doogie. I can see they REALLY love this and they have never had it before. Try it on your macaw and you'll agree.

I routinely give 'big butt' here apple juice, orange juice and grape juice. Be careful of the sugar though. The ones I buy are all natural with no added sugar. They sure do love them as a side treat to their water. It's also a great bonding exercise to 'share' from your glass. Pretend to take a sip and offer up some to them.
