A new African Grey owner

I adopted Ruby 2 weeks ago. She was previously owned by a male. His schedule became too hectic to spend much time with her between school & work. You could tell he genuinely cared for her. I think she is adjusting well. She will step up. Sometimes I use a protective sleeve that I sewed together. It's basically two sleeves from a hoodie sewn together. She has nipped me a few times. It was nothing serious enough to scare me a little though. She seems to prefer my husband. I have asked him to back off a little because I would prefer she would bond with me. She is almost 2 years old. Can she bond with a female even though she was previously owned by a male. I will be the primary one with her. She is my first African Grey. I previously hand raised an umbrella cockatoo.I welcome all the advice anyone has to give.

Such a warm welcome to you! Ruby, as a grey, is such a complex companion! This has to be so difficult for her!

Welcome to you and Ruby! Successfully raising an umbrella places you in the halls of a rockstar! Greys are different in many respects, and Ruby is still young enough to adapt. Whether she bonds to you is largely her decision, but having your husband step back a bit is a great strategy.
