A new cage, but which one!! Ah!

Hello again everyone! I posted about a month ago with worries about our new Senegal Parrot Kippy. Needless to say she is my baby, and is a welcome member of the family now. I am looking to upgrade her from her slightly small cage, but I am having issues making the decision about which one!! I am looking at the following cages, which one would you suggest and why? Considering the size of a senegal, I'd recommend a 32 x 23 cage. If one is not within your price range, I would suggest a flight cage instead.

I see that a flight cage is on that list. The one you have on the wish list (more like a small animal cage), can you easily remove the ladders and platforms if you so desire? If not, I'd recommend a different cage, although it may be hard to find one with a metal tray over a plastic one.

Try this one but you'll likely need to upgrade the dishes. The only problem with the flight cage on the link you already gave is it's only 18" wide which is really not very large as you'll see once you get toys into it.

I like the third one on your list because of the larger length and width than the others. I like that it has a playtop. What I don't like is that the playtop appears to not have a tray. You'd need to keep paper up there or get a tray or a piece of something (wood or plexiglass) so that all the toys and perches inside cage don't become a poopy mess.

Also, the one the one that Molly Green Cheeks posted is the same cage that Pritti currently lives in. I like it better than the last one (which looks like #3 on your list, but was bigger. I mostly like it becuase it is nice and high so when he is on bottom, he's not all the way down near floor. The shelf underneath is very handy. I leave large sealed containers with food and toys there. And he likes to go down there and play (paper underneath is handy). I put other food/water dishes in it though. NOTE: the photo doesn't show the white tray under the bottom of the cage floor that mine came with. It is a really important piece of the cage. I noticed you were looking at ones mostly with a play top. But you can cover the top like I did (used wood kitchen cutting boards and i clean them in hot dishwasher) and add branches and ropes etc to make a playtop or use the leftover $40 of the budget for a playpen that can sit up top. It's a pretty easy to clean cage too.

From what research I have done it seems that 22"x22" ish is the size that is generally used for Senegal parrots (Ie, Kili, [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BhS3oVDgG4]Kili Senegal Parrot - Early Vocalizations and Cat Call - YouTube[/ame]). I am not saying that you are wrong, but I would like to know where you got 32 x 23 from, I usually see that size associated with slightly larger parrots (ie, sun conures). I want to do right by my bird, and of course bigger is better, but not always feasible. My birds current cage, while small, is incredibly interactive with multiple perches, toys, and ropes/swings. I definitely don't plan on leaving the cage with only a single perch!

I am an apartment dweller so size honestly does matter to me, my cage must fit through a standard doorway so I can get it into the bathroom or outside for a proper cleaning. I know I will slack on that essential process if the cage is a massive hassle to maneuver.

I just bought a new cage for my yellow side green cheek conure at the bird fair . are their any in your area because you can find some really good buys. My other two cages I bought on line with free shipping. The ones I use are all flat top flight cages which I prefer beacause of the amt of useable space plus the flat top lets me put a playgym on top ,and it allows the birds a place to run accross the top and I can hang things from the top where ever I want It also allows the birds to climb upside down all across the top which they do like little bats. The inside usable space, from the grate to the top is 35 inches high,21 inches front to back and 3Ray just had to put them together2 inches long the whole cage on the stand is about 5 foot high. they all came with the stands that have a bottom shelf. and wheels. the online ones were 119.00 with free shipping and the one at the bird show was on show special for 75.00 plus tax for a total of 80.25 I do not use the dishes that come with them anyway as I use heavy crocks on the bottom that way any mess ends up on the tray on the bottom and not on the floor.and yes they are all brand new

I would not keep a senegal parrot in a cage that was 22 by22 myself. Just my opinion as I like my birds to have more room. By the way use can take the cages off the stands but they are heavy I would say the combo of cage and stand is about 40 lbs. and the bar spacing on my cages seems to be fine for all three of my parrots and would also be okay for smaller birds

IMO, the minimum recommended cage sizes for most birds are too small. Once you put in perches, toys and dishes, there's not much room for the bird to move around or to really stretch out their wings.

I have a 32 x 23 cage for my mitred conure and I'm able to get it in and out of the room the cage is currently in as well as taking it outside to hose it off - all without taking it apart. However, it is a small hassle getting it out of the room, and only because it leads into a "hallway" of sorts, and faces another door. If the room didn't face another, it would be quite simple!


Like I said, if you can, go larger! If not, go with a flight cage. BTW, senegals are the same size as a sun conure, suns just have longer tails! Although, thinking about it, I think senegals are larger bodied birds and have slightly larger head and beak than a sun conure does...although it's probably only minor size differences.


I'm sure you'll choose best for both your senegal as well as your needs!

That's the cage I have and an Alexandrine currently lives in it. It works great and is easy to clean. I use clips to keep all the side doors closed. I've only seen baby senegals but I believe the cage would be great for it.

I'd go with a flight cage, I have a 37" X 28"X 68"X cage for my galah that I keep upstairs in my room(a dome top not flight). A flight cage that's 30" X 22" won't be as huge as your imagining and will give your bird so much more room and at the same time be less expensive.

hi! if you have the space i don't think any cage is ever TOO big maybe have a look at second hand cages to suit your budget?

I know Michael and have met him. He told me that his cage is a bit smaller then he had wanted. So I think he would agree that a bigger cage would be better.
