i looped the leash through the inside of the harness (slipknot style) and knotted it so the clip does not slide

I like that, you are securing the Velcro so it can't open

i'd still be leery with bigger birds, though, but i think for light chewing little guys, it's a great solution. the velcro in leash makes me nervous. birds are smart enough to open cage doors, surely pulling off velcro would be child's play to them
