Adopted a Galah- seeking advice

Parrots and other avians sometimes have to wear a collar. The reasons include post operation, injury to feather plucking. Birds use their necks for everything especially the simple actiin of normal balance. This puts them at high risk wearing a collar. I think most here (especially me) aren't saying not to use the collar. My CAG had one after a toe injury. But for you to be aware of potential problems. My vet insisted that I remove collar several times a day to prevent neck problems. Owner awareness is the #1 way to keep our pets healthy. Sadly feather plucking is a problem. The causes are numerous and situational depending upon breed, personality, emotions, environment ect.

I took my parrot, Tiko, to the vet today and thankfully, everything is looking good! The feathers I was concerned about are actually new feathers growing in, which is a great sign of recovery.

I mentioned to the vet that Tiko’s previous owner had told me he once removed the collar and Tiko was fine for a few hours, but later that night he started hurting himself again. I asked if I should put the collar back on at night just to be safe, but the vet advised not to. He said Tiko is just preening and cleaning his feathers, which is completely normal behavior.

As soon as the collar was removed, Tiko immediately started grooming his back. I panicked at first, thinking he might injure himself, but the vet reassured me that it’s nothing to worry about.

Feeling so much better now, and Tiko seems happier too! Thanks again to everyone who’s been following his journey 💛
