What a sweetheart Loki is! I am so glad that his future is now certain and bright, and I know he could not be in more capable hands. It is maybe a good thing he was only in the last home for such a short time...less time for him to bond to anyone there, and get comfortable only to have everything change again.
It has seemed with a lot of the birds we have taken in that they seem to realize pretty quickly that they are home. It is almost like you can see them breathe a sigh of relief when they know that they are safe, not to be rehomed again.

I really hope so. He does show signs of being content. Beak grinding, rummaging through his food, normal preening. Hopefully he continues to open up. Thanks for your kind words, Terry.

Loki is truly a beauty, feathers look immaculate. He has a really sweet Goffins "baby dolphin face." As Terry suggested, he knows he is truly "home."

So I'm about 85% sure on the cage I want. It is called the Silverado macaw cage.

The dimensions are 46-Inch long, 36-inch deep, 78-3/4-inch high.
This is about 2.5 times longer, more than 2 times deeper, and 2.5 times taller.

In terms of cubic inches, the cage is about 11 times larger.

Sounds like Loki will be moving into a mansion! Plenty of room for perches and swings and boings and toys in a cage that large. I bet that'll bring him out of his shell and let his...um..."true goffin personality" come out

There is virtually no upper limit to the cage size for a Goffins! What you are contemplating will be awesome and bring him so much freedom. You'll likely have little to no difficulty moving him, just place the cages side-by-side and he'll likely eagerly enter. They are chewers, macaw-sized wood toys last longest!

Thanks Scott. Space is high on my list of importance for parrots.

It will be one of these two cages. They're virtually the same.

I would love to have another aviary. Unfortunately, while the space can accommodate the width and height, it can't accommodate the depth. For those who don't know, this is Kalani's setup

I also modified the separation between the common area and the dog area with these curtains. The dog gate was there and I never had any issues with Kalani, but this guy is frankly too small and too fast to risk it. It will keep him from flying over there. (The birds are only in the common area when I am giving supervision, I know the curtains aren't 100% fool proof).

A little progress already. I'm about two feet from Loki, sitting in a chair with my laptop. He is not retreating to the cage. He is grinding his beak and lookin pretty fluffy. He does back up if I present a treat in my hand (when he's out of the cage).

What are you doing to get Loki back in his cage so you can close him in for the night? Am I interpreting you your post correctly that he retreats in fear INTO the cage?

If he does, that is something you can actually get on cue quite easily.

That's right, Chris. His first time out, he flew around a bit (he was nervous), but it didn't take him very long to climb back into the cage. Yesterday he spent significantly more time on top of the cage and let me get pretty close; when I got within a few inches, holding a treat, he went back into the cage, as he was a little nervous about my hand.

have you tried putting the treat on the back of your hand? My friend's CAG would only accept treats from the back of the hand for some reason at first

That is exactly how I give a treat to my wild-caught male Goffins. He'll take food from my fingers through the bars when in his cage. When outside, he is skittish of fingers near his beak, so the back of hand method works. Bizarrely, he has no fear of my hand when I scratch his head or even put a hand on his back.

I wish I was a parrot whisperer! I get chomped on more at the rescue than I'd like to admit.

Well, sometimes the stars have a way of aligning (for me and the little guy). One of the exact cages I posted came up on craigslist. If all goes as planned, I'll be picking it up Friday for $180 rather than $500.

Thanks! I hope so. It's hard to tell from this photo alone, but it looks to be in great shape. Like I said in a previous post, you could fit his current cage in this one over 11 times!

well then that should make it easy to get him into the new cage then!

Just plop the old cage in there and let him worm his way out into the new digs
