Air Purifier

Can someone recommend a good air purifier? I’ve heard cockatoos are very dusty and we are supposed to go see one this Saturday that is up for adoption. If we do adopt I want to be prepared.

I have African Grey. I went through the same thing. More so since according to testing I am allergic to everything except my name and Social Security number (). I was instructed by ENT to get a negative ionizer that also pulled air back. Those release negative ions that make dust, pollen etc heavy and they fall. The pull back or circulation features bring air back and dust etc stick to some filter device. These are rinsed, then repeat. There are numerous styles, makes and models and energy efficiency. I was living in apartment at the time. I got the best I could afford, easily portable room to room, easy clean. As extra if you have allergies, environmental problems aka near heavy traffic and the like you'll benefit too.

I have 3 air purifiers because I have 4 parrots. They really do work. I have to change out the filters fairly often. All of mine have hepa filters. My 4 parrots are somewhat dusty especially if they are molting. They aren’t anywhere near as bad as cockatoos/greys from what I’ve gathered. At the shelter where I adopted my last parrot they had a separate area for the cockatoos with more ventilation due to the fact that their dust can make other parrots sick. I haven’t had the pleasure of handling a cockatoo/grey. You’ll have to let us know your experience. I’m curious how their dust/dander is different than other parrots. They sort of sound like a chinchilla that intentionally takes dust baths to me.

When my grey shakes, it looks like a dry version of a snow storm. The density seems to be determined by her water bathing frequency. She's particular and if she gets one drop too much watee on her, I have a grouch. I have been trained to give the exact amount of water misting. Not a drop more!

I have to change mine out every month or two. filter replacement for one of my air purifiers is $75. I didn’t realize it until it was too late. $450/year in replacing filters for just one air purifier is a lot. Ive started to vacuum them out at least once to help the filters last an additional month. I’ve considered getting a different one with cheaper filters.

This is so true! That's a reason why I ceased getting devices that needed replacement filters. I used to have job in which I traveled with houshold parrot, pups, and all every 3-6 months. I only went to large metro areas; DC, New Orleans, etc. I accumulated multiple air purifiers and hepa because filters were unavailable and/or too expensive for shipping. This can be very frustrating and adds up quickly. I didn't want to use less expensive or knock off filters. I couldn't bring myself to trust quality. It also could've been more money because those monthly filters may have only lasted a few weeks. Here is a hack a cheap friend did. She traveled with cats, dogs, 3 budgies and was in process of getting a grey. She took a cheap fan, went to hardware store for high quality filters. Taped filter on fan so air pulled past it. Set it on lowest possible setting and that was it. I discovered later that this could be found on line. Some families of respiratory compromised individuals couldn't afford the expensive devices.

I just wanted to mention this. I replaced a few of my older air purifiers. I bought some cheap smaller ones off amazon for $30. They do not work the same as the higher end ones that are more expensive. I have 1 really nice air purifier left, and it fills up with dander fast. It does its job. Air purifiers are definitely not created equally. I just wanted to share with others my experience.

An air purifier for $30 isn't going to do much. The good ones are 10x that price. When you have a big dusty cockatoo you need the good one.

I do not enjoy spending $200 for an air purifier, and the $50 filter to replace monthly on top of it… it makes me a little sassy. It does do a good job with dust & dander. Sometimes I’ll vacuum out the filter to make it last another month.

These $30 air purifiers I purchased I’ve been running for almost 6 months, and haven’t had to change the filter. It’s not due to me dusting more often either. I tried to cut corners, and it didn’t work out for me.

I always vacuum out the pre-filter. No need to buy new ones.

We sell them at Lowes and they're very expensive at $380 each.

Air purifiers with filters eventually get discontinued. Hence my current situation, and how I learned about the $30 Air purifiers that have $10 filters for a pack of 2. I should invest more wisely.

Odd, I used to buy Shark everything. Then they seemed to drop out of sight. I thought that they went out of business. The air purifier for my dusty CAG room is dying. I have to check this out.

I’m actually a big Shark fan. All my vacuums are from them. I’ve always had a great experience with anything from them.

That's a great price. We don't sell that model at Lowes. I have 4 Honeywell air purifiers that I've had for about 7 years and I'm really happy with them but I need another one for the new addition on my house so maybe I'll try the Shark.

I don't understand how you never have to change the Shark's prefilter. What happens to all the dander and debris that collects? My prefilters collect so much stuff that I need to vacuum them every couple weeks. I live on a dusty dirt road and have 20 budgies. I only change the HEPA filters a few times a year. Most of the dust and bird dander gets trapped on the prefilter. When I do have to replace the prefilters and HEPA filters I buy generic ones on Amazon instead of Honeywell's. Each one of my units has 3 HEPA cartridges so replacing 12 of them would cost way more than I'm willing to spend.

https://www.airfree.com/en-us/ I knew there are filterless air purifiers. I myself have no experience with them. Not sure how to clean them, or how efficient they are.

Any air purifiers with a filter from my understanding should be changed per manufacturer. The white in my hepa filters is black within 2 months.
