Air purifiers?

I know some birds can be dusty, and I want to get a air purifier now before I get a bird.

Id like to get peoples opinions, I have no Idea what one to get, and there are so many, every time I look, theres more, with names I have never seen before.

I have a RabbitAir and it is the best. Has 6 filters that are changed once per year. You clean the unit and vacuum the first filter about once per month. Yes they cost more but I wasted lots of money of smaller units and they ended up not being effective at all.

I thought about getting one and one of my hubbys friends came over and totally talked against it so now my hubby has poo poo ed it too . I was wanting to kill his friend totally . So now he has my hubby convinced that they are costly to get and run and they dont really work . So now I have a hubby who is totally against getting an air filter and he wont listen to any more talk about it .

id get rid of the hubby. ITS for your Health, and the health of the family, at least thats why I am getting it, thankyou spirit, I am willing to pay that, if it works, and you like it, then sure, Ill pay that just to keep my house healthyer.

(yes Ive gone threw 2 boyfriends because of my pets, they dont like it, they can just leave, I will always have my animals)

Been thinking about getting one but preferably a 'cheapish' one as I'm a student (anything around £100 is fine) and I'd rather have it from the UK.

She gave me one because my new apartment has a terrible musty smell, and it really does a great job in a mid-sized room (they have a big tower version too.) Also, you clean the filters instead of replacing them.

You get what you pay for with air purifiers. The expensive ones cover more space, and are generally better. The "one room" ones only cover one room, and sometimes not even that.

My boyfriend and I have been lucky to find several great air purifiers for cheap at thrift stores. Some of them cost around $600 new, but second hand they can be much more affordable. I paid $100 for my LivingAir at a "Fix-It-Shop", which was great when I lived with cats, and now that I don't, it's still great. My boyfriend found another couple at thrift stores for around $20. LivingAirs, and similar ones (a lot of them look exactly the same but have different names, haha), are great.

Whatever you decide to get, make sure you look at how much area it covers. If you're worried about covering your whole house, as opposed to just a room or two, a "fancier" one would probably be better. Besides, the good ones seem to last forever, so it'll definitely pay off.

I've had mine off for a week or so because I've had the window open, and I washed the filter, and haven't put it back in yet. I just realized that I'm sneezing a lot more now than I was before! Even though I only have a lint filter in mine (haven't felt like investing in HEPA filters, although it does take them), it still makes a HUGE difference!

I purchased this air purifier because I couldn't afford the RabbitAir, and I've been really pleased with it. It's helped keep the cat dander, bird dander and my allergies under control

I am going to have some remodeling in my house and even though the birds will be behind closed door, I hear that plaster dust can get everywhere!!! I need the best most efficient and safest one to put in the room where the birds will be staying.....

More often than not you pay for advertising. There are scientific studies of many of the purifiers (go to google scholar to look them up - don't believe the ads). HEPA filters work extremely well. Beyond a HEPA filter cartridge all the purifier needs is a fan to pull air through the filter.

A good HEPA based purifier can be found for around $10 for the unit, then maybe $10-$15 for the filter itself.

Most of the "high end" purifiers with all these whacky gimmicks of aligning air molecules, ionizing, or ozone production have been shown to do very little good, and in many cases they can even be dangerous.

But don't mind me - most people today would rather trust some billionaire ad-executive than listen to scientists.

But it looks like they're no longer available. In fact that seems to be the source of the few negative reviews: people loved them, but couldn't get more.

I'd just go to your Asda, or whatever else would be like our Target or Walmart stores. There are some cheap units on the market that aren't worth much - just look for one with HEPA filters and check on the price/availability of the replacements.

I'm a bit partial to Filtrete brand filter cartridges (Filtrete) but these either already come with the majority of other brand purifier units or can be purchased as replacement cartridges for other units.

I'm partial because of some connections to the 3M company who makes Filtrete - but aside from those connections 3M is one of very few American companies that still do business in ways that make me proud to say they are in my country. (Another is General Mills ... both of which are in/from my home state of MN )

I believe you are wasting you money on the smaller units. You do get what you pay for in air cleaners.

The RabbitAir works great in my house with a cockatoo, sun conure, 2 kids, and 2 cats. The cheaper filters just couldn't handle the load and i gave up and shelled out the cash for the RabbitAir . i don't have to dust everything in the house everyday now. Wouldn't give it up for anything now lol.

I have the minusA2 SPA-700A. Seems like it was near $500 for it and filters run around $75 a year. It is pricey but well worth it to me and a friend that can come to my home now. She couldn't handle the dust from any bird.
