Air purifiers

Hey everyone. Im looking to buy an air purifier. Has anyone used or know if a Negative Ion air purifier? Most importantly are they safe for using in a room with my parrots?

Those Ion towers really are not what you want. You literally will have to wipe it down constantly, and i dont think they clean the air very well because there is virtually no air movement with them.

Try and find something that runs the air through a HEPA filter, they have carbon in them.

I have been using austin air purifiers, though those are a bit spendy. You can find more affordable brands that use hepa filters, just have to check life of filter and replace when needed.

I got a different brand of ionizer and I love it. I am slightly allergic to my tiel Jet and since I got it I have had no symptoms.

The other kind are better but fortunately mine works for me.

I use a HEPA air purifier by Honeywell. They have several models depending on size. Mine has a pre-filter and the HEPA filter.

It is amazing how quickly that thing gets filled with dust with 3 birds in the 18'x11' room. It's good to periodically (often) remove the filters and clean them. I found it's not good enough to just leave the filters in and replace them after the recommended 3 months for the pre-filter and one year for the HEPA. Even after the never ending chore of dusting and vacuuming the room, it's just filled thick with bird dust very quickly again. It's surprising. It's a must to have one with birds imho.

I am in search of a purifier as well. I read that the ionizers generate Ozone, which is poisonous for birds.

I don't think it's a MUST unless you have the dusty species. We have very little dust with our current birds, but now that a grey will be entering the picture again we're looking to replace our old air filter (from when we had our previous grey) with a new one. I also agree that the ionizer isn't the way to go.

If anyone has any suggestions for a deal on a good one please post it.

Yes, a hepa filter is great with dusty birds. Our grey has made us remember how badly we need one as well!

We have a Honeywell Air Genius 5 in each of our bird rooms, and they work really well.

You have very little dust with your current birds? I sure wish I could say the same. You have more birds than me too. I have a couple pieces of dark furniture in the room, plus the fan is black, and by the next day and for sure the day after that, the dust is back to the point you can write in it and see it . That's just with the 2 Pois and Pionus. Frequent baths have not put a dent in the noticeable amount of dust in the room I'm afraid. I'm even thinking about getting an additional air purifier, but it just seems ridiculous in an 18x11' room.

My mom's house seems to be very dust resistant for some reason. Maybe it's the way the house is built and she has newer windows idk...

We also have dark furniture. The dogs being in a boatload of dust, but the birds not much at all. Now with a grey it will be a different story. I remember what it was like having a grey.

Avoid the ionizers, they do not purify the air nearly as well as HEPA filters. Spend the extra money and it will be well worth it.

I also heard that ionizers are dangerous to have around our birds. I've never used them but I used to use a Honeywell carbon HEPA filter. Honestly, maybe I just don't have the best brand (but not shabby either), but I just didn't notice a difference in air quality nor did I notice better dust control. So I stopped using it :/. All my windows are always open anyway whether I'm home or not (to keep the fresh air in for my conure). So I felt that it defeated the purpose of having an air filter, at least in my specific case anyway.

I actually checked with my vet last night about that since I went in for a well check up with one of my dogs and yes the ionizers are indeed dangerous.

Even some of the HEPA purifiers have ionizers built in as well. You want one that you can turn that function off. Hence ionizers create ozone, which is dangerous for birds.

I bought an Austin Air on Craigslist for under $100 then ordered a new filter for it from amazon for $169. The filters have a 5 year warranty from the manufacturer.

When I was looking the Austin Air and the Rabbit Air were recommended to me. The rabbit air has a 1 year filter @ $89... so I went with the Austin for the longer filter life and lower 5 year replacement costs.
