How exciting! They are really pretty. I'm always excited when Rosie molts big feathers, but they are not colorful.

How cool! :D
Yuki molted hers a few weeks back as well.
I'll take a clearer pic tomorrow on my sisters cam and then you can see all the blues/greens/yellow. :p

I also get excited when they moult their bigger feathers :D

Alex's tail feathers are so long - They are beautiful.

Floyd bird lost one of his a little while back; not nearly as big, as it was his first molt.

Trying to upload a picture but its saying it's too large >:|

I love feathers! Constantly searching when I go on walks. I even have a tattoo of one :)

They defiantly have a long tail even my India ring necks tail is huge at times and I love getting his feather. My bluffons macaw dropped a long tail feather today it's so pretty:)

Man, my guy molted his two longest tail feathers, then started chewing up his smaller tail feathers =/

It's so frustrating. Behavior started about three weeks ago, and he actually bit the tips off some of his smaller tail feathers. Been trying to get him to stop with limited success.

Ive noticed when they get older their long tail feathers grow longer before they moult. :p

Yuki's is also about that size :D She is still going through her first molt.

@ khaiqha have you asked a vet about this? It could be just a behaviour thing/or maybe he doesn't like the feeling of missing those tail feathers? I'm not too sure but I hope you can get him to stop.

I haven't taken him to a vet yet. I know what triggers it, as he only does this when I'm on the computer for too long. I mostly work from home, and if I'm on the computer for longer than a 2 hour span, he does it. He doesn't do it if I leave my home, he's fine by himself. It's just when I'm on the computer and can't pay attention to him. Even if I let him on my shoulder, or he's on my arm chewing on a toy, he'll go to his tail while I'm on the computer.

I've tried not reinforcing it. I've also been locking him in his cage when I'm on the computer so he's surrounded by toys. That buys me more time before he'll start, but it doesn't completely stop it. Unfortunately now that the tips have been bitten off the tail feathers fray easily, even when he's not messing with them. I'm just hoping he'll molt those soon.

Oh, and his two longest tail feathers have grown in completely, longer than the old ones. I like the idea of getting his tail feather tattooed, I'd probably do it on my forearm.

Macaw feathers would be absolutely beautiful! I'll have to search the net to add one to my collection :)

I just went looking for Bundii's last tail feathers so that i could measure them. From her last moult (she is 3) her tail feathers measured 34.5cm.

All of my my six birds have molted the tail feathers.Even my peacocks have molted their train feathers. My grays are also molting their feathers. What we should care about our birds is try not to touch them with love as we do in normal days.the newly growing pin feathers create pain if we touch the bids with love.

Yes UMARKHANMARDAN; very true what you said about touching the birds when they r getting new feathers,it is very painfull for them. one of my bird has finished her first molt and lets me to touch her.

Nimbus being the clutz she is broke her two long ones ages ago, but they're growing in!!! So long duck bum!

Diesel is having his first molt as well :-) he's 8 months old. We found this feather on his cage floor this morning.

Diesel is a chatty little chappy...well we THINK he's a boy. He says "Peekaboo", "Diesel Weezle Weeeezle!", "Step Up", "Hello" and "Whatcha Doin'?"...We are trying to teach him "What's your name?" at the moment.

Update on my bird's behavior: he's mostly stopped. He's only had one instance of tail chewing since then and that was during a massive argument at my apartment. His tail chewing is definitely caused by stress, although I worry that he thinks the ends of his tail should be chewed off. Everyone of his tail feathers has the end bitten off, but once that happens he takes real good care of his tail. Good news is he's lilting his whole tail right now, so hopefully the new tail feathers can be left alone.
