Hi Everyone,

I'm Rreadbeard's wife. I joined this forum too. Edie is our eclectus parrot and she seems to be settling in okay, but prefers to be on or in her cage it seems.

I'm a lot more hesitant around her than my husband is. That said, she's a wonderful bird in appearance and spirit.

How do you make friends with a parrot? What books do you suggest? Games? So far it's going great. I'd love to keep it that way.

Welcome! Eclectus are BEAUTIFUL and amazing! I will digress and let the ekkie owners chime in. I'm more familiar with conures and African greys. You will find great help here and we can't wait for pictures!

Hello and welcome! How do you make friends with a parrot?

Always make sure your interactions are positive. Treats are a great tool for this, whether offered through the bars of the cage, from your open palm as they sit on a stand, etc. Parrots, the larger species in particular, can take a while to warm up to new people. Work at the bird's pace on this (if it doesn't want to step up, don't make it) and the key is to leave the bird wanting more

Welcome, and ekkies are wonderful birds to have! Not that I am biased or anything, but I am currently owned by two. The one piece of advice I have for you that I gave my wife for becoming friends with my girl is don't do anything that you think you'll act afraid doing. Ekkies can be bossy, and if they think they can walk all over you, they sure will try. So don't give them the chance to push you around by only doing what you are comfortable with. So if you're only comfortable offering a treat through the bars of the cage for now, then just stick to that and talking to her, or reading to her.
