Jinx - Blue Fronted Amazon hatched 12.06.2012
Acording to an article i found on the net it claims the amazon parrot is the second best talker after the african grey is this a false claim or true?

I'm about 98% sure that's true. The Double Yellow Headed Amazon, I believe, is said to be the best talker out of Amazons.

It all depends on the bird, but yes I believe Greys and Amazons rank right up at the top.

I demand a re-count.

Greys and the double yellow heads and yellow napes would be at the top of the list. The napes and double yellows are really close relatives. Almost the same bird. That said, I have a bunch of yellow napes and none of them are really good talkers. Mostly because I have a long history of being bad at teaching birds to talk. If they lived with someone else, I'm sure several of mine would talk a lot.

I have to agree the double yellow headed is the best talker out of the amazons but there again some blue fronted amazons talking abillity's are second to none

I think out Panama Amazon would give a lot of them a run for their money in talking. She never stops lol.

I agree with Pans, i have more YNAs than DYHs but some of my napes will talk your ears off. Hands down the best talker( of any parrot) i've ever heard was an hen Panama i had for many years. Many of the zons in my aviary repeat lots of things that hen caught them.Every afternoon i'm reminded of her and it breaks my heart, she was my very first zon and i miss her so.

I would say, Amazons make the best singers and second best talkers to the African Grey..

For sure the king of talking is the grey but when it comes to singing abillity the amazon is the best i think the macaw comes rank 3rd after the grey and amazon but im not to sure about it even tho i have seen some macaws that are out of this world

She may be gone my friend but she will never be forgotten and there is a part of her that will stay with you forever

Our new grey is starting to talk more and has a great vocabulary. Our Pan though will just talk and talk and talk. She cracks her self up and will talk and laugh all day long. She loves to have phone conversations too!

I think Bird USA repeatedly ranks Greys, Amazons, Quakers and Budgies as the four best talkers in their annual surveys, year after year, but other than the grey I'm not sure in what order. I believe the individual bird has a lot to do with it. We had a quaker who started talking early and learned quite a few words but as she got older she didn't talk as much. We now have a macaw who spent a year in a back yard on a schoolbus stop where she talked to lots of kids. She has a vocabulary of nearly 200 words and phrases [mostly phrases] and uses them in uncanny context including things we have never heard before. She will be four later this summer so who knows how much she will learn. However Macaws don't make the best talker lists.

Where does the eclectus feature on that list? I've been told they're up there with the CAG and amazon....???

Lupin is about a year old and he can say quite a lot of stuff and I have not even really been trying to teach him words as I have mainly been doing clicker training. He is a blue fronted amazon.

pretty sure eclectus are on the list fairly high up, as i have heard that too lene; and in my opinion they can be great talkers, with such little coo-ing voices haha, but they're never above the greys, amazons, or macaws. lol.

Seems like most Greys are shy, and won't talk to strangers. Greybeard shuts up when I look at him, but carries on otherwise. He talks in real context to wifey, his love.

Aren't Amazons more gregarious?

Thanks for the info. I was also looking at adding an Amazon to my family. I was debating African Grey, Eclectus or Amazon. Definately leaning more toward the Amazon. I saw a list yesterday on PetMD that listed the African Grey first, the Yellow Nape second and Double Yellow third. I am pretty sure the Eclectus was number six. I just can't decide now if I want the Yellow Nape or Double Yellow. Any suggestions?

I would say Yellow Nape! They are not quite so noisy as the DYH... IMO , the YC, YN, DYH and BF are all on equal par with their talking ability.
