Every spring and fall, we get ants. Sam's cage is a real target, and I have been very frustrated over the past few years. Well, this year I tried something new in addition to the traps. I put the four legs of the cage in shallow containers of water. Guess what? No more ants on the cage. They drown in the water and can't climb up the legs. I change the water daily. This has worked so well, I thought I would share it. :green:

Great idea for keeping the little nasties out of the cage! While we usually "catch and release" most bugs that make their way inside, we used to have a major ant problem in an old apartment and were forced to resort to killing them. We found a bird safe bug spray called "Orange Guard", which is ok to use in the house around parrots because it is just made of highly concentrated citrus. It kills bugs on contact. You shouldn't use it on or in their cage, but the smell won't harm them if you used it in the kitchen or garage etc... It smells like oranges because that's what it's made of.

Cage legs in cups of water.... been using that for years an years. Works 100% for those curious and have ant issues. Now the kitchen area - I am open to safe ideas ! Thank god they aren't the little biting red ones.

If you are in a stand-alone home, start outside along the foundation with a real-world bug and ant killer. But only on the foundation, not on the ground! That includes any crawlspace access, basement windows and/or basement doorways. Next is all vertical section of stair steps to the house and all doorway thresholds.

Do Not Enter the House with the Bug Spray Can. Use it all on the outside!

Enter the house and go directly to the wash machine! Everything you are wearing down to the skin goes into the wash machine and set it on the longest wash cycle available with the largest tub water depth. Go directly to the bathroom and blow your nose into a tissue and then into shower - take a long and deep cleaning shower.

Follow the inside recommendations provided by Kiwi's Mom!

NOTE: Yes, it is cold in the Great White North this time of year, but ants are primarily driven by food sources. Work long and hard at eliminating any food sources.

NOTE: Water sources! The second most common reason for ants and the most common reason for other bugs! Check all pipe access points. Assure that they are closed tightly. If you have several, consider using NON-expanding insulation foam. Remember, once you are done, the can become useless! So plan your use in advance, know where you will be using it!

I found that sprinkling cinnamon across the thresholds also helps keep them out. They don't like it and will not walk on it. I use the water traps. At least I can hide them and there is no spray in the house.
