Any single parrot owners that work outside of the home from 9-5?

Okay, so I'm realizing more and more that parrots need their human, but just wanted to know from single parrot parrents that work outside the home, of their personal experience with leaving your parrots at home.

Do you guys have pet sitters when you are off work. I'm not working now, but intend on it, or at least will be in school if not at work, and I will be the primary pet taker, I want to know if you've managed to make it work being away from your parrot from the typical hours of 9-5? Did you get your parrot a little friend? I was told that if they have each other they might not care about me, and I get that because that's how guinea pigs are, and sometimes other animals. Alone, they want you, but bring in a friend of their own kind and its like "Who are you again?" Your thoughts.

I only work 7:30-3:30 and i have a mated pair of Amazons. I can see clearly alot of the reason why it is taking me so long to tame and train my birds is that i am gone all day. I have them loose in their own room when i am gone though as I couldnt imagine how they would be if they were stuck in thier cage all day even though it is a nice size. I know when i get home they scream and yell for at least an hour, its like they are telling me everything i missed while i was gone. I do have my neighbor pop in and check on them once a day though. To me they are my babies and i couldnt imagine leaving them alone all day. They will get into mischief and such just like a child can. So working 9-5 or 7- 6:30 like u said in ur previous post is gonna be difficult for a any bird to be alone. Also my birds were already a mated pair so it was obvious they were more interested in each other then me. Its just taken time for me to wedge myself into their little circle of friends =) Sorry i wasnt more helpful. =(

People working full time normally works 7-8 hours per day... Whether it's 9-5 or 7-3.. It's still 8 hours... Most people also have traveling time.

There's a lot of people on here working full time. A lot of it depends on the bird's first couple of months, it's ability to entertain itself and the owners ability to afford proper health care and toys that'll keep the bird occupied during the day (foraging toys).. A bird will also sleep a lot, if there's no activity in the house.

We work long hours, but we ended up getting 2 macaws-they are fine, they have loads of toys and the TV is great-you never know what they will say next-so I have to select non swearing channels

as said above toys and tv! i really don't like leaving nut caged while we are out, but i make sure she has her fav chew toys (these only go in when we are all going to be out) foraging toys, perches rotated every now an again, old toys brought out and rotated

nuts not cheap to keep lol but once you get into the swing of being organised etc it just becomes a quick daily routine, to set up cage for the next day, plus nuts main cage is in the front room window, so she can also have a look outside, she also sleeps alot (its not sleeping its like snoozin, alot through day, even when we are home

Thanks for responding.. Because I was being told that its not a good idea to leave a bird in his cage for a long time, because of them getting lonely, and of course who wants to but soon I'd have to be gone, so I thought to myself " I know there's people that are single, a student/working eight hours with a parrot."

as long as you leave time to keep the bond alive, so when you get home, ensure you can spend one on one time with your bird, i generally give nut a good 5 min head scritch when i get in or let her out, then she tends to follow me about while i cook/clean etc and in between she gets plenty of scritches and tellings off cos she is naughty!

I am working 8 hours a day and therefor it is important to spend 1 hour at moning before going to work and that she is a part of the family all evening

I work an 8-hour day, plus travel to and from the office. I purposely chose a parrot - a brown-head poicephalus - that is independent and can entertain himself for a while. I also leave music or the tv on always, and I make sure he has out-of-cage time every day.

Odd, I thought I responded to this.. But yea, I intend on keeping Birdie out when I am home, relaxing. Now that I am older, and have done some research I can be a better parrot parent. They didn't have all this info around for me the ten fifteen years ago I had birds (parakeets).

I work part time and go to school full time and both my parrots are wonderful <3 They have plenty of toys in their cages and I come home at lunch time to swap out who's outside. My bedroom is birdie proofed so I can let one out at a time while I'm gone as they keep to themselves and their own toys
