So...have you tried to potty train your conure? How did it go?

Our 2 current birds (parrotlet and cockatiel) both have tiny little poops that don't bother me when it hits the counter, floor, my arm...

I am concerned that a GCC poops would be much bigger and I'm not sure I want to be cleaning up big piles all day.

What do you guys do?

At the beginning, it is very important to time how often your bird will go, as they are all different.

I started with a junk towel that I didn't need. Whenever Lucy started making the body motion that she was going to go, I would move her to the towel and say go poop. After she went, I would praise her a lot. No treats or anything.

After she got the hang of the towel, I moved onto the garbage can. It did not take her long to adjust. I made it a habit to do it every time I took her out of her cage. Low and behold, she kinda beats me to it now, as when I walk to the cage she will go in one particular spot and I don't even need to go to the garbage can.

Whenever she is out, I try to go back to the garbage can every 15 minutes or so. If she has to go, she will. If not, we go back to what we were doing and try again in another 15.

Understand no bird will ever be perfectly potty trained and there will be accidents, but I was never really concerned about the little stuff. In the morning when she wakes up, you better rush to the garbage can though, or that is a big disaster that needs cleaning!

I trained one of my conures by simply saying "good potty" every time i saw her go potty.
only problem now is that she will hold it if we go on a trip. she even holds it when shes in her flight suit. so i bought a wide and short ladder and i let her climb it and potty from it. i started asking her to step up on the ladder and said "go potty"

I trained Guava using the same principle. It didn't take her long to catch on.

I love how they all do the back up butt before they go

I love it too xD

Well, Loui is always pooping in her cage in the exact same spot. Noone trained her, she just always finish eating and go to the same particular spot. Sometimes she will even go back to the cage and do her business but it's rare. I am planning to begin with the potty training outside the cage soon. We will see how it goes.
