Aspiration pneumonia

I got a free sample of Booster palm oil supplement with an order from Northern Parrots and since I have been so worried about Cookie's health recently I thought I would try it.

It says you can administer it, so I did, by syringe. First day went successfully, but today I did something wrong, I accidentally tilted Cookie's head back while I was giving her some and she started sneezing and it came out through her nares.

She only had a small amount.

I cleaned up her nares, gave her some smoothie and put her to bed, she seemed fine, but I just read about aspiration pneumonia and now I'm worried.

I am an idiot.

This is what I gave her.

I read that it can progress quickly and you don't notice any symptoms apart from weight loss.

Am I just worrying, or is this a cause for concern?

She may be fine. Definitely keep an eye on her, though!


When I was giving my bourke parakeet medications and supplements, almost *every single time* I did, it came out her nose! She's 17-19 years old. On one hand, I'm surprised she hasn't died yet. A bourke parakeets expected lifespan is 11-15 years of age, and I've only heard of/come across two older than her. On the other hand, I'm surprised I haven't killed her! She was getting milk thistle and Vetri-DMG orally almost every day, up to twice a day, along with having to do nasal flushes (varied from daily to a few times a month - involves holding bird upside down and flushing saline through each nostril). This was done over a span of 6 or 7 months last year. (currently monitoring, but not giving meds, supplements or doing nasal flushes)


I have Booster as well, but in a Concentrated form... so it's a solid, not a liquid. You can see what they look like on this page (the small white round 'drops')

Awhile back I put Hahnzel on his back right after he'd had some water. He did aspirated and it caused a noticeable change in him. I took him to the vet and he stayed overnight. He was discharged on antibiotics and after a couple of days and his shots, he was back to normal.

Oh, and Frumpy? You're not an idiot. If you were, we all would have attacked you like a flock of crows on a fat kids lunch box. And yes, the attacking you part was a joke...

I hope Cookie is okay? Since it's been a couple days, if she's acting normal, then no worries. If not, if you see a little something that's not right, then you know where to take her

Last year my husband and I gave our Budgies a "bath" in the bathtub. The water was very shallow, but I can see now that it needed to only be about an inch deep so they could splash around in it... and not "go swimming". I know, real stupid. I can't believe I'm admitting it even :11:. It was hubby's idea not mine LOL, but my bad for not stopping him.
Pix jumped on poor Twig's back and pushed him underwater for a second, but he aspirated a lot of water. Water was coming up for an hour afterward. I kept him warm and held him. I knew he'd be okay, but it did take a day or two before he was 100% again.
