So after getting merv back after three days out in the freezing weather, i was feeling sorry for her and for some reason let her sleep in my room....yes, in my bed....
Lucky i did apparently when i woke up this morning she was barely responsive, couldnt perch, and her feet were freezing
a panicked run to the vet revealed her as hypothermic (apparently if i hadnt slept with her she would have almost certainly died last night), dehydrated and with a serious bacterial infection (which she would have already had before her escape attempt (prob caught from one on my foster birds), so she was a bit skinny and her nights out in the wild have made her very very very sick in her weakened state
So now she is in intensive care in an incubator being force fed and given fluids and antibiotics...
My poor little girl, Im hoping so much she will pull through, I cant believe i would get her back for her just to die on me???
Im horrified i never noticed she was sick! I did notice she was a bit skinny but i thought it was just because my piggy eccie was stealing her food so i started feeding her outside he cage where she could eat unmolested - aside from that she was happy, active and seemingly healthy as ever...
Im desperatly hoping she will be ok, time is going very slow right now...

OMG! after reading the post about Merv getting back home it all looked so good and now this! What can I say? I hope she will survive this, she survived 3 days "lost", she can do it. Go Merv, you are a fighter. Isnt it weird, you decided to sleep with her (have you ever done that before?), and it may just have saved her life. You dont know why you did it but you did, sometimes you just cannot explain why. Thinking of you - GO MERV, hang in there!

You and Merv are in my thoughts and prayers!

Poor baby! I wish you all the best! Keep us updated!

My thoughts are with you both.

So sorry to hear! Shortly after rescuing my GCC, we rushed him to the vet as he was vomiting, weak, and lethargic. After two days (one night) in an incubator, he was doing much better. A few weeks of lots of different meds, he was all better and doing great. Now eight months later, he is still feisty and back to his noisy self. Just a positive story to let you know that they can fight it off! Hope it turns out the same for you in the end!

Oh my goodness! I am hoping for the best.

thanks everyone....she made it through the night which is great but she is still not eating on her own. She was down to 64 GRAMS (OH MY GOSH!!) but she has but on 5 just from the feeding.....they are going to keep her in intensive care for at least another four days..

64 grams.....ohhhhh poor little thing...Ive been out and bought digital scales and am going back to my weekly weighing regime! I cant believe she got that low without me clicking on that she was so sick.....and im an experienced bird owner! Just goes to show you when you dont want to believe it you caN ignore just about anything! I guess I always have seen cockateils as really hardy....i did mention to my fiancee that she seemed to be taking more naps during the day and he just laughed it off and said i was being silly she was flying around like a maniac earlier when I was out of the room....from now on I trust my instinct every time....

Eccie is going in for a check up next week just in case. My gosh its amazing what that 64 grams and 2 and a half inches does to your heart! In the last week what with her escape, return and now illness, i feel like ive aged 10 years!!!!!!!!

(I forgot to mention - vet bill is at $800 and climbing, but I dont care a jot. No holiday for us this year - i would give up every holiday in my life if it meant she makes it through!! Lucky my understanding vet allows installments...)

That's great news! :-)

Haang in there Merv. In a few months we will be reading that Merv needs to go on diet - too tubby LOL (xxoxxoxx for Merv and you)

Merv Died on the weekend. Very sad. I cant believe we got her back for her to die like that.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Big hugs to you!

So sorry to hear that :( I'm glad you had the chance to say goodbye and that she could be with you in the end even if it was really tough. My thoughts are with you.

Oh No! I am so sorry. Hugs to you. Glad you got Merv back to say final "goodbye" though. I am so sad reading this.
