And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
... I really didn't know what to expect.

The doc did a gram stain on Beebs poo. Certain bacteria its suppose to have. She said when looked at under a microscope, there is bacteria colored purple, and bacteria colored red.
She said BB's poo showed way too much "red" and not enough "purple".
She said this could be caused by many factors, diet being one, kidney or colon proplems ( she did say the volume of "clear liquid" <urine> is taken care of by the colon with a tiel not by kidneys> and he is producing too much).

So she gave me antibiotics (Enrofloxacin) to be given twice aday for a week then bring him back in. If there is little to no improvement, then blood will be drawn to check for any organ problems...which she said given his young age shouldn't be the issue, but also stated it HAS happened :52:

She showed me how to hold him and to medicate him..he took his meds with little fussing.
He also needs a diet change..no more millet! (fattening!) He needs more vitamin A. She gave me a list of good veggies/fruits to give him..I told her he wont EAT that stuff, unless I'm eating it and I don't always have the time to have dinner with him..Like some folks here have stated...she said make a game out of it...praise him when he does eat something good..

Anyway I'll stop rambling now..it's a wait and see game for a week..change his diet slowly..pellets are good but the tiel seed food...ehhh not so good (zero nutrition)
Thank you folks for caring...it means a great deal to me and Beebs and Amy.

Jim

Jim thanks for the update on little Beebs. You may find this link interesting reading. Obviously take your AV's advice re seeds. A little extra time each day can reward you with extra time with little Beebs, can feel like a real PIA sometimes and you wish things were easier, I should know. :-)

If you can prepare ahead a Vit A type chop and freeze small portions for little Beebs breakfast or dinner that may help?

I hope this med is the the right one for the particular bacteria once the gram stain results come in. That way he can start healing asap. Or else they'll prescribe a different one. Either way Beebs is well on his way to being all fixed up. You're a great dad Jim :).

Thanks for taking care of MY BEEBS.
I am holding you both in my heart.

Good on ya for taking BB in for a check up. Salty's about due, too. I'll take him on his second bird day. Try an find a fav veggie forBB and introduce a chop based on that, slowly adding more variety to it. Not easy but obviously needed. No more people food, OK? Salty eats dinner dinner with us but he has his an we have ours. But we eat all together.

Thanks for updating on Beeb's condition. So, very less millet or none ("candy") for Mr. Beebs then. Making a birdy chop could "disguise" the veggies/fruits. Makes me think of Baby. They really do thrive on being part of the flock especially at feeding time for both us and them!

Beebs is lucky to have you. Keep us posted.

I NEVER give my tiels people food even though I am a "whole foods plant based" vegan meaning I eat no processed foods but I do put salt in some of my food. I never give him anything with salt in it which qualifies as people food! Tiels are so incredibly tiny... what you might think is "just a little salt" is actually way too much for their tiny bodies to handle. Please feed BB non-greasy healthier plant based foods so he stays healthy and OK :)

I always eat with my tiels but they have their own separate plate right next to mine and they understand this. Takes me just a minute to heat up some sweet potato, quinoa or wild rice for them which they eat next to my plate. All super healthy starches.

I'd say it was an excellent visit, Jim! Glad to see Beebs is a good patient and taking his meds without too much fuss! He trusts you for sure!!

Diet is so important, and this early intervention will make it easier for you to make some important changes! Hope his poos are normal once the antibiotics run their course, and no other issues are found!
