Hello, this is my first post. Koko is a 20 year old, Yellow Naped Amazon. Lately I have noticed that his beak is always slightly open but it looks like he's closing it, so a slight gap would be a more accurate description. He did have a change in diet for two months and is now back on his regular diet. he seems pretty normal other than that. Does anyone have any ideas of what the problem is, if there is one. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!

You have a picture to post to show what your talking about??? It would be quite helpful....also when's the last time he went to see a vet? And why did he have a diet change for a couple of months?

I will post a pic soon, yes, he is over due for a vet visit. there are no avian vets around here...No excuse. His diet changed for the same reason. He has always thrived on Kaytee Rainbow Chunky and for some reason it is hard to find. Thank you for your reply.

Where are you located? Perhaps try some online vendors???

Yes, that's exactly what i did. I don't plan on running out again. I have some photos but i'm not sure how to upload them. when i try it asks for a http? I am in the unincorporated part of the San Bernardino Mntns. in Cali.

Make him a vet visit! Either his bottom mandible needs to be trimmed or he had a cracked beak on the bottom sides.

i'm on it...thank you! what do you think they can do for him?

no cracked beak, as far as I know and im with him hours a day. So, they may be able to file the inner bottom beak?

Have them check on it and they will do what is necessary. I'm just going by the picture as the vet will see it in person to determine what needs to be done. Let me know what they say!

We got back from the vet this afternoon and Koko's bottom beak is overgrown. He advised to give him lots of things to chew on and to use a cement perch for him to rub his beak on. If it does not improve in 6 week we will have to grind it down. I hope it doesn't come to that. he suggested it was the change in diet sense the grocery store food was less work to eat. All should be well...thanks for the advice. i will post a pic when his beak is better! if i can remember my login...
