Big scary cage?

I am picking up a new rose-crowned conure tonight, just weaned. The cage I have set up is quite large, about 32" across and 20" deep. Small bar spacing. Should I keep him in a smaller cage for a while? I have a bed time cage that would be the right size for him for a while.

If it were me, I'd probably put him right into the big cage. Conures are pretty active and I'm sure it won't be long before he is using every bit of it.

I think it'd be better to just go ahead and put him in the larger cage, better than changing cages all the time, he'll end up feeling more secure in the larger one, then changing cages 'often'.

Like Roxynoodle said, conures are pretty active, he'll be hanging like a bat and making the most of those toys and space asap!

I've only had one new baby fresh from the breeder, but I did put her right into her nice, new, big cage and she did fine.

I also debated all the way home with Pete: put him in his little cage he was used to, or right into my much bigger one. I kept going back and forth, and finally decided to just get everything new over with at once, and put him right into my big one. I think he was happy with it right off though. He climbed all over it, including across the top right away. I think he was happy to actually be able to move and flap his wings.

And of course Merlin had to move into a new cage right when she got here. I couldn't have her old one because it was a 2 story stacked cage and their amazon lived in the other half. He didn't go to his new owner until a week later. So KBEquine got that cage, but that's ok as she has adopted so many birds she probably needed it more than me. Merlin didn't seem to have any issue with her new cage.

Babies are also much more adaptable in general than older parrots who sometimes become very attached to their cage.

Thanks! I brought him home, put him in his cage intending for him to have sleeps, but he wanted to be out so bad! So now he's out, on my shoulder, maybe falling asleep. He had a sunflower seed although he's not that great opening them up yet. Very sweet.

I don't know if you remember the other Rose Crowned Conure I had. I had to give up as awful as that sounds and feels. He was neurotic, I don't know how else to say it. Terrified. It was only getting worse. The breeder agreed to take him back for an exchange (I almost got a grey hehe). She said he does have an issues and doesn't like women. I hope I didn't cause his problems! At any rate, this little guy seems much more gregarious and outgoing, whereas Tristan just hid in my hair when I went to buy him.

Naming him is going to be tough! I've called him Baby so many times I feel like that's his name but I already have a cat named that!

Well, Tristan maybe will do better with another owner, and you should think of it like that and not feel bad. I wasn't sure how things were going to go with Pete either since I was told he didn't like women. So far though I'm seeing the exact opposite ?? Today he hit on the mail lady, lol! But, I did take him with the idea that if he hated me after a year I'd try to find him a home with someone he did like. Thankfully he decided after a couple of days that I wasn't so bad after all, and now he wants me all to himself, and is getting quite jealous when I'm playing with the other birds.

I've been calling all my pets "boo boo" lately. I watched an old episode of Laverne and Shirley a few months ago and remembered Shirley's stuffed cat that she called Boo Boo Kitty. It is stuck in my head now and I'm calling the cat and all the birds "boo boo".
