Two days ago I got Billie, our black capped conure out of his cage. He happily sat on my chest(I was laying on the bed) and he was playing with a toy that he was throwing around. After a few minutes, I decided to turn some conure videos on youtube for him, he loves watching the other birds and likes to talk back to them. Well, I don't know what happened, he went from being all happy and talking back to the "other birds" and then he charged at my face and grabbed ahold of my bottom lip, right next to my lip ring. I got him off and put him back in his cage, he had me bleeding on the inside and outside of my lip. It didn't look too bad but it hurt like crazy, so I rinsed it with salt water and then put some neo on it. That was two days ago and today my lip was so swollen, I knew I was going to have to take the ring out and put a stud in it. It took about 20 minutes just to get the ring out since my lip was so swollen and when I got it out I realized how bad it really was. It ended up bleeding again so I got the stud in, cleaned it up and it feels so much better now.

I just wish I knew why he does things like this. This is how it always happens and I've never had another bird act like this. He will be the sweetest, nicest bird and then just randomly lay into me. Everytime he does he doesn't want to let go and he draws a considerable amount of blood. I just don't understand how such a sweet bird can also be so aggressive, every time it's happened I've analyzed the situation trying to figure out what I did wrong and I just don't get it. I know some may say that it's because there were other birds on the computer but he really isn't a jealous type of bird and he isn't afraid of anything so I don't think that has anything to do with it. It's almost like he just gets so excited that he just bites because he can't contain himself. He is fully flighted, has a huge cage and is out a lot of the time so it's not like he doesn't get any exercise, I just don't get it.

Here's a pic I just took, sorry it's not so good, it's hard to take a picture of your own lip lol. You can even see the indent from the CBR(captive bead ring) from my lip being so swollen.

I've had quite a few nasty conure lip bites myself just because they got overly excited giving me kisses. I think it is Billy getting really excited watching the videos that are the cause. A lot of birds bite when they are overly stimulated. They don't mean to hurt us, but it's like their little brains are just going crazy, and they don't know what they're doing. Might be safer to put him on a stand when you let him watch the videos. Rowdy gets really excited by videos of other birds, especially conures.

Oh, and I know how much that can hurt for days. I hope you feel better soon and don't get an infection.

I'm glad it's not just him. He just seems like an overly hyper bird, even when he's spent quite awhile out of his cage and flying around. When he gets really excited he just bites whatever is closest to him, which unfortunately, is usually me.

Conures are already so hyper naturally that I think they get super wound up.

At least amazons are nice enough to display for us to let us know they are overly excited, lol!

With my BCC I could see her eyes pinpointing because they were orange. Rowdy's are brown and it's harder to see, although she does tend to be very vocal when she gets in that state. She goes completely bonkers though when she hears Sun conures. That's why I knew I didn't want one. I figured they would be screeching at each other all day for fun.

Oh man that looks like that hurts so bad. I am glad you are ok but sorry he got you so good :(

I agree with Roxyn, Merlin gets excited and becomes too nippy because of it, we know it's not in aggression, he's just.. hyper.

Looks so sore, I daren't get any facial piercings now since getting Merlin for that reason!

Ouch!!! I hope you feel better soon!!!

Of course the other problem is conures tend to latch on and start grinding as you described. They can often give a worse bite than a bigger bird because of that tendency. And it really sucks when it's your lip. It takes a few days for the swelling to go down.

This scares the crap out of me. My Nanday has gotten my nose ring three times now. Pulls it right out. So happy he hasn't gotten my nose like that! Hope it heals soon!!!

Ouch. That looks pretty painful. Guava has also bitten me when she gets overly excited, as Roxynoodle has mentioned. Sometmes when we turn music on and Guava starts dancing, she'll randomly start nipping anything nearby. So just be mindful of them when they're excited and give them some space.

Could it be they are just attracted to the jewelry ? Since RachelMarie has also mentioned her Nandy went after her nose ring/
I was in a bird store a while ago and there was a sign right under this Hyacinth. It read " Beware , I will take , play with , crush , then spit out your jewelry .Touch me at your own risk ". Also , on the bottom of that read "the store is not liable for any jewelry , personal items."
Just a thought.

I honestly thought that (about mine). He'll be sitting on my shoulder and just pop up and pluck it out of my nose. I swear he thinks it's a bug or something. I have a mole on the opposite side of my nose ring (on my upper lip) that he's always trying to pluck off as well. Luckily, never blood though (at least not yet). It always scares the crap right out of me.

ouch that looks painful. hope it heals fast

Ouch... You just have to stop putting body parts into that birds beak...

I hope you heal up quick...

I did post to someone on here that I ask visitors that want to handle Rowdy to remove piercings and other jewelry. I've been worried she could rip someone's piercing out and injure them. Since I have a metal allergy and can't wear piercings, she hasn't been taught not to touch them. And she is very attracted to them.

OUCH!

He probably is trying to get the lip ring... Mickey is always trying to take my husbands earring....one day he's going to get it...lol

Also it must have been the day for this....Mickey got me pretty good on the lip last night too.....

I had cleaned up some droppings with a paper towel and was headed to the trash can with him on my arm....he was trying to grab the paper towel (he's a little obsessed with paper) and I told him no...well I didn't even get no all the way out and he latched onto my lip HARD!

Hope your's heals quickly!
