Bingo is going to the doctor

Came back from another vet visit.
I really hope we can get an answer this time.
He’s been shaking his head a lot and loosing weight.

My vet flushed out his sinuses and captured some to send to a lab and culture it out.
Also a sample from his throat.
Bingo felt thin to me but he said his weight was ok, just under 500 grams.
His preen gland is sort of dry so he told me a mix of oils to give him daily.
Should have the lab work back by Friday.
Stay tuned for more updates.

Was supposed to get test results back Friday but it didn’t happen.
Hopefully Monday.

Here is short video of Bingo eating oatmeal.

I just got back.
Bingo s not happy.
I am not so happy either.

He got a nail trim.
Blood test.
General checkup.

I am not happy with the bill.

I will get the blood results Thursday.
And I got antibiotics and meticam to reduce inflammation.

Here is a short video of Bingo this morning.
I gave him a light shower before his appointment.
He was sort of talking a nap afterwards (very unusual).
And he was making his grooming noises even though he wasn’t grooming.

You have to turn the sound up to 10 to hear him.

Awww… I’m so sorry, I pray he gets better soon. And hope you’re doing ok, it hurts to see your baby hurting.

Test results are in.
No pathology in the nasal and throat swabs sent in.
Once again money down the drain.
Spending money and getting answers is one thing.
Spending money without getting answers is frustrating.
Make me wonder why bother going through the trouble and stressing him out for no gain.

I hope to take the Twins in next month for a nail trim and DNA test on Merlin.
The Twins are more difficult to handle.
Both can fly unlike Bingo.

We are at the end of February and the weather is getting warmer.
This means Bingo is feeling better.
His energy level is up and he’s driving me a bit crazy.
Wanting out constantly and going so far as climbing up the drapes and exploring the kitchen counters .

He still has symptoms of something and I am taking him back to the vet on the 11th next month.
I have been chatting with Grok and outlining his symptoms so I have a tentative plan of action.

It seems like he is suffering from a sinus drainage problem. We need to find out if it’s bacteria related or fungus related and I am going to insist on a culture from his sinus to find out which. Then I will strongly press for nasal drops for treatment not oral meds that have proven useless.

Bingo keeps shaking his head and as he does I get splattered with tiny drops of moisture on my face and arms. It’s not coming from his nares it has to be from his mouth and we all know birds don’t have saliva.

I will leave you with a picture of Bingo getting ready to make waffles.and coffee.

Love an Amazon that knows his way around a kitchen!

Worse than no answers is when you go in with a live but very sick bird (or other animal) and leave with a cardboard box and a $250 euthanasia bill.

Bingo is still losing weight.
down from 500 grams to around 465 grams.
his keel bone is very prominent still shaking his head excessively.

my CAV is out for a week and his next appointment avalable is not till the 21.

I have made an appointment with a new (to me) CAV that is an hour and 1/2 drive away from me for this coming Monday.

he will eat people food and some fruit but that's about it.
giving him extra eggs and potatos n pasta.

getting frustrated here, windows spell checker not working.

keep your fingers crossed for me n Bingo and hope he can last.
and hope this Dr can come up with something to help him.\\\

Poor Bingo. I'm so sorry he's sick. I hope the new Vet is really good. You live in the LA area, right? Have tried Dr. Frank Lavac? I had very good experiences with him when I lived in LA. He hospitalized my budgies quite a few times for serious injuries (fractured wing) and renal failure. They never rushed my birds out the door- they kept them in incubators, did bloodwork and imagining inside, tube fed them when they were not eating well, and administered fluids injections for hydration in addition to medications.

I live in L.A. county but the extreme north part (high desert, Palmdale/ Lancaster ) and we only have one CAV here.
There are several exotic vets, I have been to at least two and they didn’t fill me with a sense of confidence.

The other problem is some of the CAVā€s have a two week waiting list so drive or no drive it’s not helpful.

When I lived in Redondo Beach it was a lot easier.

I have visited the www for locating CAV’s and I want to avoid Dr’s that would make it necessary to drive the 405. I am sooo done with that freeway I would drive twice the distance in any other direction.

This vet has two CAV specialists, maybe between the two of them we can get Bingo taken care of.

Oh Wes, I'm sorry I'm just catching up with this news now. All my best hopes and prayers go out to Bingo, and sending love and hugs to both of you!!

I took Bingo to this new vet (in Claremont) yesterday.
Long drive for both of us.
I thought it HAD to be better than driving 405.
I was wrong, trip going wasn’t too bad except I took a wrong freeway briefly. The way back never went beyond 25 MPH . Took 3 hours and my back was in misery.

As soon as we got of off the freeway and onto the highway home (in the high desert) Bingo KNEW we were going home and was dancing off/on the rest of way home.

I was not happy with this vet.
No bathroom.
When they took blood they would not do it in front of me.
Tiny waiting room, like 3 chairs.

They offered performing a barium x ray test of his digestive tract.

Having been the subject of such a test myself I can’t put Bingo through that.

I got sent home with the usual Rx , antibiotics and pain meds.

I didn’t really have much hope that I would get to the bottom of Bingo’s problems
My main goal was for an update blood test.

I'm sorry it was such a bad experience. Did they even get the blood?

I wish you had a place to go like the new animal hospital my avian vet here in Maine (of all places) just built. He never had enough space before for us to come in with our birds during appointments but now it's nicer than most human medical offices. I'm not sure I'd want to be in the room during a blood draw. I have no problem with needles for myself but my little birds? That's hard. When I saw Dr Frank Lavac in LA I always went in and saw what they were doing with my birds and they took amazing care of them.

I really hope Bingo's okay. I remember his smiling face when he won POTM last year. I never saw such pure joy on a parrots face!

LA freeway traffic can only be tolerated when you have an acceptance attitude, good music, access to a hands free phone, and plenty of time to make it a day trip. We take frequent road trips to NJ for family. Seven to 10 or more hours with bad traffic really stinks but if we have a budgie (or two or more)with us, good tunes, snacks and drinks and a calm mind it's not that bad.

He got the blood test, just waiting for results.

I had to drive work and back about 150 miles Monday/ Friday for 20 years. But….. I have been retired for 5 years and just SOoo done with it.
I drive up/down to southern Oregon every year sometimes more than once.
It’s 750 miles one way.
But in that trip only Sacramento and Stockton have bad traffic.
You can see progress and miles rolling by.
And rest stops to stretch.

Bingo sitting with me now and he looks as worn out as I feel.

I'm sorry you drove so far just to end up getting such an unsatisfactory outcome, Wes, you both must be exhausted! I hope you both get a good night's sleep tonight and that tomorrow is a better day for you two šŸ™ šŸ™ šŸ™
