Bingo is going to the doctor

Mashed potatoes? Rice? My budgies like these.
He eats both but rice is off the menu.
My wife just took off on a month long visit to her 102 year old mother.
My attempts at cooking rice have been failures.

I got him to eat some carrots tonight.
I fixed a Marie Calanders pot pie and I don’t like the carrots but he ate most of them 🥳

Awwwwwwww Wes, that's wonderful that Bingo ate his carrots! Would he eat peas and corn? My guys go crazy for them :)

You can't cook rice? It's so easy and my birds love rice! Get a box of rice a roni long grain and wild rice with vegetables and follow the directions on the box for water volume and cooking time but either leave out the seasoning mix packet or reduce it in half (Birds say it tastes better with some seasoning and it contains some veggies) and leave out the butter or sub a tablespoon of olive oil.

My Modified Instructions For Bingo's Rice a Roni:

1. Use a small pot (a saucepan). Bring water, olive oil, and 1/2 of seasoning packet to a boil.

2. Add the rice. Stir. Bring back to a very slow boil and cover the pot
Stir every five minutes so it doesn't stick to the pot and put cover back on each time.

3. Once your cooking time on the box is up, turn off the heat and let it sit on the burner covered for another 20 minutes. Stir and fluff it when all the water is absorbed. Let it cool to room temp before serving to Bingo. Eat some yourself in front of him so he knows how Yummy it is!
You can add some canned or frozen peas and carrots to it after cooking.

I hope your wife's Mom is doing well at 102!

Have you ever fed egg food to your birds? I use it sometimes mixed with soft cooked food because when its dry its not very palatable. Pro breeders swear by Quicko brand egg food to get birds in top condition for breeding and showing.
You can also mix scrambled eggs into cooked rice. Baby bird formula mixes well with cooked rice, too.

When I wean baby budgies I mix Harrisons super fine pellets into the formula to give it texture.

He used to eat veggies and especially liked corn but stopped eating it.

I don’t buy rice a roni any more .
I have watch the price per box go from .99 up to $1.69
Outrageous for a small box of rice.
If they ever drop prices I’ll go back to buying it again.
The amount of shelf space at the store for rice a roni has been significantly reduced so even the store knows it’s not selling at the high price.

They keep trying to fake out the shoppers with false “sale prices “ like 3 for 5 dollars.
I can do the math.
🧮.

Sorry I offended your budget.
I was just trying to help.

Not offended, it’s a matter of principle.
.69 cents isn’t going to bust my budget but the claim of inflation at 30% means the increase is double the rate of inflation.
That’s just greed and uncalled for when so many people are struggling.

If more people stop buying stuff that is outrageously marked up the company’s will git the message or go broke I don’t care which way it falls.
Just my opinion.

My try’s at making rice end up like glue or not fully cooked. My wife came up with a recipe for making a rice a roni equivalent in the instant pot but…..
My list of “things I can cook” is limited.

No weight gain from yesterday’s meal of carrots.

I used to have a stainless steel rice cooker that did the trick real nice. Was cheap too, but I don't remember the brand, and the cord got damaged so I had to pitch it 😖

Hey Wes, maybe not ideal, but at this point, anything you can get him to eat and consume some calories is a win. So maybe minute rice? I make a little of the brow rice now and again. Super easy and scalable, and a small box lasts for ages. Just need a small pot with a lid. I make 1/4 cup at a time. Equal amounts water and rice, bring it to a boil with the lid on, turn it down to lowest for 5 minutes or so, turn it off and leave it there without opening it for another 5 minutes. If it's longer, no problem because it won't overcook that way. I usually add some herbs or ceylon cinnamon to the mix and cook it that way and Tucker loves it. The other two, not as much. Worth a shot. Sending prayers your way my friend. 🙏🙏🙏

I agree that rice shouldn't cost so much. When someone has a hard time making from scratch sometimes overpriced conveniences are helpful but I never buy national brands if I can avoid it.
Rice can be tricky and can come out gummy.

If you make rice and it comes out gummy you can rinse it through a strainer and it improves a lot.

You should try making tricolor quinoa for him. It's so healthy. I have a jar wirh instructions on it. I'm going to make a small batch following the instructions and let you know if it was easy and came out good.

I did the quinoa. One cup water in a small pot. Bring to boil. Add 1/2 cup tricolor quinoa. Stir. Cover. Simmer on very low 15 minutes. Let sit covered for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork. Perfect.

Tastes nutty. Birds love it.

When my daughter cooks rice I have 2 choices; crunch or mush. Same thing no matter, stove, rice cooker, microwave or boil in bag!

Nameliss loves rice: brown, wild are her favorites. She likes quinoa too. I make a batch for about 2 wks, cool, put in mini ice cube tray, freeze, then pop out 1-2 a day. I'll add veggies, eggs or whatever.

I can't cook rice on a stovetop to save my life, but quinoa almost always comes out perfect. Much easier in my (limited) experience. Also healthy stuff.

Quinoa does seem kinda dummy proof unlike rice which has a mind of its own sometimes.

The first time I cooked quinoa I had paste! Since then no problems. I do agree that rice can be contrary.
