Bird droppings toxic?

I have a 6 month old B&G Macaw and my sister in law and 13 year old niece have moved in with us temporarily and have been driving me crazy about our bird. They constantly make remarks like "birds are disgusting" and "bird droppings are toxic" etc. I however think that their dog is a tad more "dirty" than our very well taken care of bird. I just wanted some feedback regarding the subject. Thanks

No it is not toxic.. Just my opinion but if they have moved in with you they need to be grateful that they have a place to stay. I would probably tell them if they don't like your bird then stay somewhere else that doesn’t have a bird. But I probably wouldn't be as polite as I had typed.

BTW my dogs eat everything the birds drop and I mean everything it's far more discussing then your bird would ever be.

lol my dog does that and its very disgusting. Plus dog poop smells as do the dogs, bird poop doesn't and neither do the birds. Dogs slobber, birds don't. Dogs leave hair clumps everywhere, birds leave beautiful feathers, dogs spend half their day sniffing each others bums and licking their 'never-nevers', while birds spend half their day grooming themselves ......not sure where they get the idea that parrots are disgusting.

I agree with what Chris and Ben have said. They should be grateful and while birds can be messy, they don't have the disgusting habits that dogs tend to have (I do love dogs though!).

I've come across people who get concerned about droppings and that if it isn't cleaned up often, then they feel it's not hygenic and get concerned that bugs will grow etc. Perhaps that's where their comment on 'droppings are toxic' come from?

I would like to add that birds don't stick their nose in your crotch nor do they carry ticks into the house like dogs do. I like dogs but not for extended periods of time. I am definitely a bird person.

And no, bird poop is not toxic. I also have to agree with what Chris said. They should be grateful they have a place to stay and that they should respect everyone in the house. I treat my birds as part of the family and not just as pets.

Being as there are no toddlers around I fail to see the issue?

Their dog can get ill from eating the droppings but aside from that.....

I am both a doggy and a birdy person but I do think in this case it boils down to a family situation.

It must be very stressful not to have your own home at a time of life where you'd expect to. Even so, you have been kind enough to let this woman her dog and her teenage daughter move into YOUR home.

Being honest, I would simply remind your sister in law that she knew that you had your baby when she moved in and that if the behaviour continues, she will have to find somewhere else to live. It is a case of common decency and lack of appreciation.

I believe that's a cats litter box. When I was pregnant with my now 15 yr old daughter I was never told that. Just the cats..

Thank you for the replies and I think the same thing. I am a very clean person and clean Nicos cage every day, vaccum every day, she showers and is kept clean and smells alot better than her dog I guess Im just over protective and dont like people giving our bird a hard time. Kinda ticks me off lol.

The truth is that pregnant woman are allergic to absolutely everything that can be picked up, pushed or that requires any type of labour. Cleaning of any cages, litter boxes, kitchens etc. are strictly forbidden.
