I have a white-capped pionus named Pepper. I've had him/her about 8 years I believe. At the time we only had one bird, Pepper. He/she was very attached me, very much a one person bird. Sorry if this is long, just needed to add background info.
In 2005, we went on vacation and boarded Pepper at a very well-respected avian specialist. On our way home from vacation, we find out there's a Hurricane and the city has been evacuated. We contacted our vet and he said he had evacuated with all the animals. Long story short, because of my dad's job, we were stationed in TX for 3-4 months. Our very nice vet kept Pepper for 3 months until we could go get him/her.
Since then, Pepper has been quite the terror. He bites me now, will not step up (never has--I think the breeder wasn't socializing him/her well). I tried to give him his favorite treat, almonds, and he/she bit me. Pepper will walk towards me on the floor and likes to "preen" my eyelashes. So he/she doesn't totally hate me. But Pepper was quite upset and now I'm one of his/her least favorite persons.
I'm trying to repair our relationship slowly. I just don't know where to start. I would love to be able to take Pepper on a ride on my shoulder again or give him/her a head scratch. Pepper apparently did not like our 3 month seperation which turned into an even longer seperation til I could finish the semester I started at a temporary school.
How do I begin to start?
When I'm gone to visit my mom in LA, I come back to very much fussing from him/her. I can no longer work or attend school anymore, so I'm home much more now. And I have plently of time to try and gain his/her trust again. I just don't know where to start? Advice? Book recommendations? (Oh, and we're starting to wonder if he is actually a she).
