blue & gold macaw or cockatoo?

hi everyone i am looking for a parrot and need some help deciding between the b & g macaw or the galah cockatoo both are really nice - but wich one?

i work long hours and i can bring it to work in the first few months to give it extra attention.

Do you have experiance with that big birds? maby consider a bf Amanzon, they are normaly little easyer to handle

You need to do your research on each bird, try to find personal stories on each breed as well. While they both require a lot of time, effort and money, they are still very different birds.

What about those two particular types of birds make you interested in them? You picked two completely opposite personalities. Just curious.

You can still work and own a big parrot, you just really have to put extra time aside for the bird. However with that said, set up your routine from day one (whatever that may be). You cannot take it to work on a regular basis for the first few months, then never again (esp. if you pick the Too, you will have a very angry bird - which leads to screaming and feather plucking/shredding). It would be either never take it to work (or rare occasion) or everyday. Whatever routine you can stick to the most for the rest of your life is the one you need to go with.

thank you for the advice molcan2 - i understand your point on keeping the routine permanently the same. the reason between these birds is they are extremely beautifull. i would have loved to have a major mitchell or hyacinth but they are very scarce here, i am a bit limited on choice. but i had chance to meet a galah and she was really sweet.

In the first place, NEVER base your decision on which bird to get by beauty. This could be a disaster for you and the bird. You need to consider which bird would fit your lifestyle best, then the peronality of that particular species and requirements. Out of the two you selected, I would choose the Macaw. Cockatoo's don't handle being alone for long persiods very well. Also, where do you live, an apartment, house ????? How will your neighbors feel about getting a bird such as a cockatoo or Macaw. They will have to live with the noise just as you will and both species are LOUD!

I like to check You Tube on bird videos if I'm thinking about a particular bird. Check out Screaming Macaws or Screaming cockatoo's to give you an idea of just how loud they can be. Turn your computer speakers all the way UP to get the full effect. When you do this, just think, this is what you will be living with the rest of YOUR LIFE. Because owning a bird like this is a life time commitment.

at the moment i am only doing research on which one is best for me, im starting with the birds which i like , if none of them would be fitting in then i will move on to different species . i do live in a house and the noise will not be a problem. i am considering the cost - where is the closest vet specializing in birds - food - and after i spend alot of time on youtube i think the macaw is just the best thing, i also read most of the post on this forum - it was really helpfull in my decision - thank you everyone

Please keep in mind that those birds are like having a 2 year old with a big beak for the rest of your life! I'd love a one also, but I just wasn't ready for that kind of commitment yet!

Thank you, I wish more people would realize this before making the decision to get a macaw. But unfortunately, they wait until they get one only to realize the commitment that is required. Craigslist is full of folks who bought first and thought later.
