Boarder murdered my bird

My lovebird was killed by another customer's cockatoo, IN THE COCKATOO'S CAGE! I am on deployment, but according to my wife the boarders put our lovebird in the cage with a cockatoo, because they were "getting along". Then they left them unattended... poor little Ricky didn't even have a chance.

They emailed my wife saying the owners of the cockatoo were going to put him down, as if that were something that would make it right. It's a sad day for the human race. I told her to reply and make sure our ignorance doesn't cost two lives. The cockatoo was just defending his territory. Imo it's the boarder who should be put down.

They are going to refund the boarding fees, and offered to get another lovebird and "train" it for us... right. Anyways, I don't want another lovebird, it seems it would be like stuffing a square peg in a round hole.

That's awful!! I'm so sorry! What an irresponsible, stupid, ****-for-brains boarder! What on earth would make them think that was okay? I'd be hesitant to let them play together, let alone leave them unattended!!

If I were you I would take legal action... Report them to the BBB and whoever else you can, file a police report, and perhaps press criminal charges if you can. And of course, give them a review (or several) on Google!

It won't bring your baby back, but perhaps it could prevent something like that from happening to someone else.

This is part of the reason why I don't like other people watching my animals....I let a friend watch my 7 months old puppy once because I was out of town for my sister's wedding. She died on my sister's wedding day and I was devastated....At first before we left town I receive a phone call that a lady found my dog wondering around. He left the back gate of his house open and she got out. I was NOT happy! We went to retrieve her and brought her back there. She died cause of his ignorance!!! He did NOT listen to a single word I said to him. I told him she's just a pup and needs to be watched closely, NOT left alone outside by herself. That's exactly what he did is left her outside alone....

I am sorry for your loss, the boarder people are idiots to do such a thing!!! You should make a post in your area so others know. You need to seek compensation as your bird was NOT an item, it was a living animal!

Firstly, thank you for your service. You & your family are in my prayers.

Secondly, I agree that the boarder should be reported to the BBB. I would also file a claim against their insurance provider. I am a retired former Property & Casualty Insurance Agent. It's not about the money, but to penalize the boarder & keep it from happening again in the future.

Lastly, I would demand that the employee who put them in the same cage be fired & misdemeanor animal cruelty charges be filed. Nothing will magically heal your heart, but sometimes action to prevent further pain from others can lessen the sting. I am so sorry for your loss.

Ricky was our baby. He was the one who was always with me while my husband was away, and he loved to watch The Real Housewives of New Jersey and Beverly Hills with me.

I'm more brokenhearted and outraged than my husband.

This should have NEVER happened to our bird especially after I gave the "caretakers" written and verbal instructions about how our bird was not familiar with being around other animals nor other birds let alone be left in the cage of a bird 10 times his size. The beak on this bird was half the size of our little Ricky, so imagining what may have happened to him brings me to tears! I'm disgusted by how she was describing how awful it was for her to see what had happened.

I'm enraged that these people had the nerve to let my bird loose around not just the other bird but random dogs, cats, and other animals they were babysitting when they assured me that they kept the birds separate from the other animals and kept the door closed.

I'm PISSED that these people took it upon themselves to disobey my instructions and had the audacity to leave our Ricky unattended in the vicinity of another bird he does not know. I don't give a flying **** that for the past week and a half our Ricky and the cockatoo "appeared" to be getting along. I don't blame the bird and I'm REALLY angry about how they are trying to pass their negligence onto the cockatoo and not acknowledging the fact that they caused the problem. The cockatoo was not the one being paid to babysit my lovebird, so how is the cockatoo responsible? Regardless of their experience with birds, how DARE they leave our bird in another bird's cage and think that they were going to be fine without supervision?

As for contacting the BBB, I plan on doing just that as well as filing a police report for possible animal cruelty in the first degree (711-1108.5 section 1: a & b) as soon as I get back to Oahu and retrieve Ricky's items. In addition, I have already started alerting other military families about what happened and how Pampered Pets Hawaii allowed our lovebird to be killed!

I manage a kennel that will sometimes watch small animals. What they did is unacceptable and negligent. When we have dogs come in with special instructions they are to be followed to the letter. If Fido gets fed out of a Kong in the morning and gets his meds wrapped in cheese, that's what we do. Doesn't matter if he'll take his meds on his food in a bowl. They need to be out of business....fast. Spread the word to anyone that will listen, Craigslist, Angie's list, google search reviews....

serial killers often start on animals as children, that boy needs serious help and you could possibly press charges, you have the neighbor as a witness. the fact that a child kills like that is very alarming, idk what would drive him to do that, it could be mental, or a result of abuse among other reasons. thats very scary that he did that and someone should adress it, i stongly recomend you press charges or get someone to investigate him, justice for your birds, and stopping that boy. also i am terribly sorry for your loss.

to the original poster: i am very sorry, it angers me that they were so ignorant and then try to place the blame on an innocent bird. you should place fliers around the area about what they did to discourage others from bringing their pets there.

That has to be one of the worst cases of animal abuse I've ever heard. And that coming from a KID? I don't know what would possess anybody to do this but it makes me angry and upset just reading it. That kid needs some type of help.

Retarded is a word of the past... This intellectually disabled boy had no idea what he was doing...

His dad probably had no idea, either... It's very difficult to support an intellectual disabled person.. Sounds like the dad should have had some support from outside with his son.
