Body odor?

So, after moving overseas for a couple of years I am back in the States and getting back into having birds. My new conure is Teddy, an orange-sided conure that is just a couple of weeks beyond being weaned. He came home (after his flight from Florida to Colorado) just about 10 days ago and is adjusting extremely well.

My question his body odor. My two previous conures -- a maroon belly and a peach front -- never had an significant, unpleasant body odor. Teddy's body odor is certainly not unbearable, but is definitely noticeable.

Any of you experience this? Is it perhaps because he is so young?

hmm I know all birds have their own smell but if it is a strong odor I might be a little concerned. Have you bathed him? Has he been vet checked? It could be some kind of bacteria causing the odor. Is he doing ok besides the odor? Eating good? How many feedings a day is he on? I know handfeeding formula doesn't smell so good. I would maybe give him a bath. I give my baby b&g baths all the time because the formula smells to me and it gets in his feathers. I also blow dry him sometimes but dont use hot air. He loves being blow dried! Make sure the water is luke warm and don't use anything other than water, no soaps. I also use the sprayer on my sink and Alex loves the sprayer. After a bath, if the smell keeps up I would definitely take him to a vet to be checked.

A vet visit is in order here. There as several infective processes that could be present as birds are not supposed to smell bad to a human. Is it the droppings or the feathers?? Either way please make an appt. with an avain vet.

Great advice here! Definitely have a vet check done. While handfeeding formula can smell, it is not unpleasant. It could be bacteria or yeast.

I have to agree with all of the above advice, it was also the same thing that popped into my head after reading your post

Just to let you know, after the first few weeks the odor disappeared and he now just smells like a conure usually smells.

Did you have him in a carrier on the way home?

I've found giving them a good bath helps quite a bit!!!! Especially if the previous owner never bathe them.
