Binnie, Green Cheek Conure Born July 2025, Adopted March 2026.
Tips for bonding with a handshy green cheek? I just got one last Saturday. He is about 10 months old. This is my first time having a green cheek (I've only had an Indian ringneck before)

We do out of the cage time, I've set him up so that he has a ladder to his cage so that I don't have to grab him and ruin what little trust he does have.

He's on a pelleted diet, he had been giving 50/50 pellets and seeds where I got him from. He's made the switch to just pellets and seeds as treats easily. He's currently on zupreem fruity blend as that's what he is used to, but I do plan to switch him to Harrison's. (What size do you guys use pellet wise?). As for chop, he's still figuring that out. He does a lot more of throwing it around than anything, although he does seem to take to broccoli okay. We're working on it lol.

I got him from a privately owned exotic pet store, where he had been hand raised and also allowed to interact with customers frequently. However there are more younger birds right now, so I'm thinking he's been less handled lately as everyone oohs and ahhs over recently weaned babies. He simply does not want to interact with my hands at all. He hasn't bit, and he doesn't freak out and run away. He simply sidesteps all attempts at hand anything, even the classic step up that I know he's familiar with because he did it with me at the pet store. He unfortunately is clipped, although I plan on letting his wings grow out, and wonder if he will become more bold when he can fly. He seems interested in what I do around my room and will often flap like he wants to fly over and see what I'm doing.

He will happily take sunflower seeds from me, we are already working with the "touch" or target command. No seed or treat is enticing enough to interact whatsoever with my hands.

He has plenty of toys, and overall is pleasant noise wise. He chirps quietly and less quietly to himself. I'm already in love with the scratchy tone that's so different from what my ringneck used to sound like. He will start shrieking though, and will become very animated during it, and seems like he wants my attention, but from far away.

What can I do to get closer to him? I don't want to push him too far and lose trust, but also he just seems so uninterested in interacting with me directly. My ringneck was all up in my business all of the time so bonding with her had come very easily. I'm a little stuck on how to move forward

Lots of verbal praise and patience. Use a variety of treats. Pine nuts, pecans, pistachios and others to name a few. With verbal praise it doesn't really matter what you say. Just pleasant and encouraging with his name. Learn his body language and base your interactions with him on that. Then it will seem to be his idea. With less frustration on both sides. As far as fresh chop, join the club. It's acceptable to some. And a battle for many. My CAG will eat with relish today what she swore was cyanide and arsenic mixed with concrete yesterday. Read through the posts about chop. There's plenty of good ones. I use a combination of several.

WHat I tell every parront trying to bond - go at the parrots rate of acceptance and not the rate of your expectations. Every bird is its own, well, bird.
