Both of us are going to be working full time...

My fiance and I are going to be both working full time as we graduate here in december. We have had our GCC since january, and he has become really attached to us. We try to have him out of his cage most of the time, but as we graduate and take full time jobs we are worried about attention issues with our GCC.


We had him during an internship and he loved us after we got home from work, was all over us and didn't want to leave our shoulder when we got home. That was only a three month period however and I could tell he was sad when we were gone.

So, question; Do we get another bird for our GCC? We read about birds attaching to each other and ignoring/hating the owners and we really don't want that. Our bird is our absolute love, we couldn't imagine being without our little pigeon , we don't want him bonding with another bird and then we can't play with him or cuddle, or take naps with him. Also, if we take another bird,should we go with another GCC or can we do something different, like a budgie or maybe a cockatiel?


I want the best for our little bird, if that means he bonds with another bird and emotianally distances himself from us, I guess that's how it goes. We are both full time individuals so he will be by himself from eight to about five. What's the best plan as we move into a new phase in our lives?

Oh, no, they won't hate you! LOL I got 2 budgies and a lovebird as friends for my gcc Parry, and after he tried to fight the lovie a few times they all got along great. One budgie absolutely adores him - he goes with him everywhere like a puppy, preens him and tries to feed him! Parry preens him too, but is less interested. They are always together, but Parry still likes us and wants to spend time with us, and so does the lovie. Birds are flock animals, and besides some exceptions they do better when they are not alone.

Only get another bird if YOU want another bird. Don't get one for your existing pet. I think my birds enjoy the sounds of other birds in the house, but none of them can interact with each other. So you'll have to keep in mind you might be doubling your work and your first bird might not appreciate the interloper.

Many people work full time, and own one bird. Everything works out well. Make sure that he has plenty of toys, and things to occupy him while you're not home. Interact & play with him as much as you can when you can. He'll be fine by himself. People think that our pets think like we do, but, they don't. During the day, he'll nap, preen, bathe (if he can), and just do everyday bird things. He doesn't need a friend, or a pet, or a mate. He'll be fine on his own.

I must agree, get another bird for yourself not your existing bird. It's just a nice plus

I wanted a second bird, and the plus was that Rosie wouldn't be alone when I wasn't home. Now I have Kenji, who is incredible. And even though they don't have contact they enjoy one another's company. I've been pretty busy lately. I'm a pretty busy person, I'm ways thankful thag Rosie and kenji can keep one another company while I'm out

i work full time i just take out the bird for 15 mins before i go to work and a 2-3 hours when i come back from work.
