Hello all,
I was just wondering if there is a way to tell if an alexandria is a boy or a girl before they get the ring? and without a DNA test

it is practically impossible tell without a DNA, even the ring can sometimes come in late or you can get a "ghost ring" on a female

For the cost of a DNA test it's easiest just to go for that

There are “ways” that an experienced aviculturist can tell with relative certainty through things like pendulum sexing, pelvic bones, head shape, leg position, and how the baby stands or squats for hand feeding, but even when employing all the the above methods together you can still be wrong. DNA tests are only $20, and I highly suggest getting one for you Alexandrine :)

Hi all I've found a alexandrine 5 months old and the owner says that he thinks the alex is a male because there is a black ring coming in? what do you think?

Rings come in during sexual maturity normally, they can come in early but remember that Females can get a ring too (just not as prominent)

honestly DNA testing or seeing an egg plop out are the best ways, especially when a DNA test costs very little it's best to do that

though in terms of behavior there is nearly no difference between males and females. As a pet ringnecks are very much the same as males and females, the only reasons to worry about gender is for medical reasons and breeding

If the ring is coming in in whole black individual feathers, it’s a male. If the bird is just getting a shadow ring it could be male or female.

This is the alex, i think it might be a shadow ring.

It would probably be better to base on behavior, although I'm not sure at just how young these guys may display a specific behavior, if any, towards one gender or the other.
