Buying a conure

Hey, so I've been stalking this site for months. I've been looking to buy a bird for awhile and decided to go for a green-cheek after looking at different species

We bought the cage and I have toys coming soon, thing is we don't know where to get the bird. The only place that have conures is Petland but there is also a Bird show near me next weekend. I thought it would possibly be cheaper and a wider variety (I'd really love to find a turquoise green cheek) but the trade off is a chance of getting diseases from the show.

Is the risk worth it or go with one from Petland?

Even the ones from large pet stores can have diseases. This is why it is so important to take your bird to the vet after bringing him/her home despite where you get it from. You could also check craigslist or breeders or rescues in your area. Good luck! Green cheeks are so much fun! And welcome to the forum!

Thats what I was thinking and why I didn't rule out the bird show completely. Where ever I get my conure from I'm going to get a vet appointment for him/her :) I don't know any breeders in my area but I'll check craigslist

While birds are masters at 'masking illness', there are signs you can look for when picking out a bird.

A 'healthy' bird is active, vocal and their feathers are smooth and in place (outside of molting). A follow-up vet check after purchase will confirm health status.

Hello and welcome to the forum! Great advice above. Please be sure to share pictures of your new baby after you find him/her:)

Hi WildTosa,

Congrats on your decision. Where are you located? How far would you be willing to travel? There are breeders that ship, if you find one that someone is familiar with and deems reputable.
