Hey so I think it's approaching the time where I need to look at getting Lincoln a new cage. He's recently had to go onto pain meds for arthritis and I've heard him fall off his perch a couple times now. I want to get something wide, but not very tall. But I'm having a hard time finding any that fit the bill that are also decided for medium to large parrots with thicker bars. Any suggestions?

Good for you for being so concerned. I recently faced a similar challenge wit the ancient Rb. I bought the very same cage as before, but situated all perches etc. to about half the height of previous. So far, so good!

I don't know if his currently cage is suitable for just making things half height. I might have to fiddle with things. The bowl holders will be tricky because they're fixed to doors half way up the cage.

He may do well with corner platform perches installed, either wood or wire, for comfort and stability. I like half log style wood perches too. I'd wrap any regular perches in vet wrap for comfort and grip.

And pad the bottom of the cage with something—maybe a few extra layers of newspaper or whatever substrate you use. I use a wire shelf for my elderly conure and cockatiel.

My old man cockatiel likes those "bridges" made out of sticks running parallel. I bought him a heated perch, but the cord on it looks like a cockatiel eating snake, so he's never used it lol

As for a cage for Lincoln, hmm. Maybe you could look into if any of the fancy furniture style sturdy wire dog crates would be made from parrot safe materials. I saw something at a dog rescue a few years ago that looked like a short squat parrot cage almost, and I was surprised to find out it was a dog crate but never googled them or anything so I don't have a company name or have any idea if it's bird safe unfortunately. They make a lot more "old man friendly" designs in little bird cages I'm realizing

Another member just bought or is buying this set up for his disabled Ringneck. It's modular with 14x17x about 18h inch sections that fit together to make as large/long a cage as you want. I think it's from Temu. I like it a lot because of the flexibity and the solid bottom contains the mess. It also has big doors to get the bird out. Some people don't like Temu because it's cheap China merchandise but almost all cages sold in the US are from China.
