I have the cage for my GCC (coming home in two-ish weeks) mostly all set up! A few things are missing because I'm not allowed to have them until Christmas (happy hut, cement perch, metal water dish, cuttlefish bone...not sure exactly what else) but its mostly ready!

Cage dimensions are 31”L x 20”W x 42”H (measured the actual cage itself, not including the stand in the height) with 1/4" bar spacing.

So far it has 2 natural wood/branch perches, 2 ladders, 1 deer antler perch, a spiral rope perch with a ring link toy attached, two rubber ball toys, a mirror, a wood chewing toy, and three destroyable toys. Plus his egg-shaped food dish and a temporary plastic water dish, and several more misc toys to be switched around in and out of the cage daily/weekly.

I also have a playgym for him.

Am I off to a good start? Anything else I should try to pick up before Peeko comes home? :D

You are off to a really good start! It sounds like you got all your ducks in a row for your little birdie! The cage is an awesome size! You are starting off to becoming a wonderful owner! Keep it up :) :green:

It's looking great! Nice and roomy! :)

Thanks, I'm glad! I feel like this one is a downgrade. The cage I originally had was 36"L x 25"W x 47"H but the bar spacing was 1" and I was told (and shown videos to prove it) that GCCs could easily escape such a cage. So glad that was caught before Peeko came home!

Great cage and setup. Going to be a happy birdie:)

Thank you! I'm so happy to hear that I'm off to a good start :D

looks great....better not let my Rico see it he will be packing his bags...lol....remember to post pics of the little guy....

I don't recommend mirrors, but otherwise, it appears to be a good start!

Might be fun to add in some different levels of perches or platforms, too! Can't wait to see the setup after Christmas!

My boyfriend had a generous moment and bought the mirror for me/Peeko as a gift - he would have none of me not using it. So I'll watch him carefully with it and if it becomes a problem, I'll remove it :)

Tomorrow's the big day!! I cant wait to finally bring home my baby!

Here's an article about mirrors
The Problems with Mirrors

I think that short exposures to mirrors and shiny objects are fine, but I don't feel as if a long exposure (i.e. constant access) to these items is "healthy" for birds, single, pairs or in aviaries. Many birds don't understand that they are looking at themselves and not another bird, and I've heard of plenty of birds who have become aggressive towards their owners or those who have become less interactive with other birds because of mrirors. I also saw one cockatiel that was so attached to his mirror that he would not move anywhere around the cage except for food and water. He was fed a poor diet, and his entire cage, mirror included, was covered in a fine feathery grease! It was both disgusting and sad.

I'm sure your bf means well! And I hope you don't see any of these issues! If these problems do arise, at least you'll know what to expect and perhaps what to do in that event!

Can't wait for photos of Peeko home!
