We recently "adopted" a Bourke's parakeet that flew into our backyard. We are still hopeful that its owner will show up, but we are preparing for keeping him/her (i'm assuming girl as it has no blue around the head...). My kids are excited. Of course, I am scouring the internet trying to find information on maintaining the little girl. First, we would like to get a cage that can hang in the order or our family room. From what I've read, the Bourke's like horizontal cages. But, I haven't been able to find any specific recommendations. Does anyone have any recommendations for a cage?

Thanks!

Hi, and welcome I love those little guys! They are a beautiful little bird! Most any cage that would work for a green cheek should also work for this little guy!

Bourke's are like budgies when it comes to cages. You are correct that it's good to get a wider cage with horizontal bars for climbing, and the bigger the cage the better. Make sure the bar spacing is 1/2 inch and you get the biggest cage you can.

I know everyone has different space and funds, but if I had a small bird/small birds, I would absolutely get something he/she can fly around in. With the small birds, their beaks are not too tough on cages, so the materials are much cheaper and cages much more affordable.
