I have a macaw, and his cage is having some problems. He can bend the bars with his beak, and then I need to straighten them out. They really never look right no matter what I do. These cages also get rust so fast sometimes. I don’t know how else to say this but his cage isn’t big enough. His tail is always hitting things. His wings can’t stretch out comfortably & freely. His cage is huge too, and I worry about him a lot because I just always feel like he should have more space. He likes to be in his cage. He does come out, and will interact but he will go back to his cage on his own. His cage is his safe place I assume. I am looking at a new cage for him, and because of what he is an escape artist too I’m running into many issues with designs. Does anyone have suggestions?

I’ll post my macaws current cage below. It’s a great cage, and it will work for other macaws I’m sure. It’s just mine is kind of naughty.

Thank you for any advice. It’s my first huge parrot, and I’m running into things I haven’t had to deal with before.

No experience with the giant Mac beaks either, but I have three of those cages for my guys. Well, two plus one that's the same but flat top. They're enormous for medium sized birds, but not the most sturdy. First one came with Tucker when I adopted him, kids bought the second one for Baxter as a Christmas gift for me, and the third for Avery, I bought used super cheap because it was advertised as a Kings cage, and when I got there and it wasn't, they offered me a super deal because they just wanted it gone. It was almost brand new, purchased for their grey who passed away shortly after from an inoperable tumor. It was in their storage unit and they were cleaning it out, so it had to go. Lucky me, and lucky Avery!

Mine don't bother with the bars at all other than climbing, but I could see them easily bending them if they were inclined. There definitely are cages out there with much thicker bars that should hold up to a large Mac or Too, but they don't come cheap, unfortunately. And they weigh a TON!

HQ cages are reasonably priced and very sturdy. I actually believe they are made by the same company who makes Kings and to the same specs. However I can't swear to it. I do know that Kings replacement parts are direct fit to HQ cages. At least for the ones I have.

You get what you pay for when it comes to cages. $681 for a macaw cage is dirt cheap. I paid over $2000 (plus shipping and tax) for my macaw’s stainless steel cage in 1992! It still looks brand new. Sadly, inflation is real and a truly well made stainless steel cage (not Chinese junk) will cost you many thousands of dollars. That said, if you buy right, you only need to buy once. As Henry Royce famously said of his Rolls-Royce cars, ā€œThe quality will remain long after the price is forgotten.ā€

Look for high quality used cages locally. Good deals can be had second hand if you search persistently.

My macaw is not interested in chewing the bars of his cage, but I know you can custom order cages with double welds for particularly naughty birds.

This was the cage Blue came with when I adopted him. I wanted to learn his behaviors before purchasing him a cage, and then I learned what happens if a cage is not sturdy enough for that beak.

It's too bad you're in Minnesota; I just saw a screaming deal on a big stainless cage in Jersey over the weekend!

I’ve really struggled to find a stainless steel cage for Blue. They are either smaller then his current one for around $1500, or large enough to where they won’t fit in the room he’s currently in as it’s more of an aviary. His current cage makes it look like he’s going through a maze with his tail to go over, and through a bunch of perches. His tail is so long.

Do you still happen to know where that deal is months later? I'm in Jersey and looking for a SS cage :ROFLMAO:

I bought my cages from Wayfair. I have bought 2 double sided cages and love them. One came with one of the top bar above the door not welded very good on the end of a little bar so I took a picture and complained and wanted a door part replaced and I said I'll send that door part back. They told me to keep the cage or donate it and they will send me a free whole new cage. 😲 I'm shocked free cage free shipping. So I covered up that bar with a seagrass mat on outside and inside of cage so my Eclectus isn't near that bar and I have a extra cage. GREAT customer service. Here is a stainless cage you might like. The double cage I bought wouldn't work for you for it's not the stainless steel one. They have other stainless steel cages and they are at a great price. They stand by their warranty and it's all free shipping. I think I got my cage within a week or two. yfhttps://www.wayfair.com/pet/pdp/tucker-murphy-pet-clairemarie-7375-steel-flat-top-floor-bird-cage-with-wheels-w004187330.html

Etsy has stainless steel cages on sale also. I buy my bird food though them.

Have you been to bird paradise? That's where I saw it, and they seem to have really good sales semi-regularly.

Yes! I actually bought an A&E stainless cage from there that was pretty poorly made in comparison to the Pervue cage I bought previously. I’m looking for something with 1/2ā€-5/8ā€ bar spacing for my boy, but that alone has been a challenge in addition to issues with finding quality stainless. Thanks though!
