Can no longer buy my parrots food

As the title says, I went to buy my parrots food and the store no longer carries it. I can buy it online (for now, but I’m starting to think it’s been discontinued) but it’ll take awhile to get here. In the meantime, I’m feeding her a different pellet but she refuses to eat it. I don’t have any of her old food left.

What can I do to help her eat the new food?

Old food was Tropican lifetime formula sticks. New food is Zupreem natural pellets. She won’t eat them. Sad day.

I just looked it up on line currently it is not being discontinued. Maybe that store is no longer selling it for whatever reason. So check on line. On line can be tricky. A 5# bag lasts just under 3 months for me. But I keep a 1# bag as back up in case she's a greedy pig or there's a delay in delivery.

Oh don't you hate it when they discontinue stuff that your bird really likes?? Or that you yourself really like for that matter - it happens to me all the time!! Could you give Harrison's pellets a try? My guys converted over to them fairly readily, although I do not have a Grey and I do believe they can be a lot more finicky with new things. I hope Tropican don't end up discontinuing Dolly's preferred food altogether!

I tried to get Harrison’s but the only local place that can get it is the vet clinic and they told me it would be about 3 weeks before they would have it in for me. So trying to bridge the gap until then I guess.

The sales associate told me they will no longer be carrying it and that they have been slowly noticing a decrease in all tropican bird food on their shelves. After looking it up online, I can really only get it from Amazon now and it’s $6/lb now instead of $4/lb I was paying. So I just made an observation that now that no stores in my country are carrying it anymore and the price has gone up 50%, that it might be being discontinued. It was only a guess though.

A lot of places are no longer carrying items. It doesn't matter what. Pill cases, tools but not the replacement blades or batteries and too many more to mention. I'm not exactly sure why. My vet stopped carrying any bird feed after 20 years except recovery. Said the expiration date would pass before it sold. Age showing. This triggers a memory from the past. Ma and Pa local grocery and gas stations were run out of business by the big groceries. Those are being run out by online. To compete they've become online. Local docs by big groups. Those big groups are facing competition as hospitals decentralize to compete. In the meantime consumers suffer. Sad but true. My daughter gets upset because I go to the grocery instead of delivery. But I refuse to be homebound. I meet some of the most interesting people. Plus I enjoy watching Nameliss people watch. Then watch people as they react to her. Like the bus driver the other day. She kept whistling at him and yelling hey. I apologized. He laughed and said he'd never had a bird try to intimidate him before.

I got my picky eaters to eat Zupreem pellets by soaking then in unsweetened apple juice.

I’d give that a try.

I like reading about things people try to encourage their parrots to eat things. I try to keep them in my mind if I run into trouble.

Amazon is supposed to have something to prevent price gouging. They've gotten in trouble for it in the past. A seller buys cheap bulk and sells high. Is there a way to contact Amazon? Articles have been written against them in the past on various items concerning this exact thing. I'd check on line company prices and report to Amazon. Don't know what it will do.

I wonder if that still works when all the stores no longer sell it? There is no price I can check anymore as it’s no longer available in any stores in Canada (that I can find anyway).

I think it's important that we get our birds to eat a more varied diet rather than developing a high dependance on a particular manufactured product for this exact reason. If your parrot will only eat Product A you are at the mercy of the manufacturer and the supply chain. Discontinue the only food they will eat and your bird could end up going hungry and potentially starve! One more reason to get you birds eating chop, sprouts, fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds.

They tend to expire, and then they can’t be sold. They went on to explain that they purchase the food maybe at a discounted rate but they still lose money once they have to throw the food away. The can’t recoup the loss at that point.

I agree with variety except for pellets. The cost is too high. Unless I have missed something all my reading for decades. It is recommend companion parrots a quality pellet brand for (this varies) 30-60% of diet. I used to keep other sample brands as back up. No go. Now that I discovered she loves recovery formula maybe sprinkles of it could help everything except my pocket book.
