I think the price really depends on places, but as far as I now, a small apartment for a single person in Beijing wouldn't normally higher than 4000RMB (around 615 dollars) unless in really expensive areas. It seems much lower compare with USYou paid a fair price, even a low price, compared to US prices for hand fed baby sun conures. Here they are about $800-$1,200. But I don't know whether a US dollar can buy the same goods and services as it does in your area of China. For example, if a small apartment in a nice US city costs $3,000 a month, how much would the same apartment in a similar Chinese city cost (in US dollars)? Is the cost of living in China higher or lower than in the US?
