I recently made Chico a pvc perch and duck taped the top green (for grip). I think he really likes it. Here are some pics…

That looks great! :D

Another option instead of duck tape, as Chico may chew it, is vet wrap.
 
Good idea I didn't think about that if Chico starts chewing on it I and I still want tape that will be a good route to go down.
