I have a 7 yr old cockatoo that I would do anything for. but for the last few days she has been having some major mood swings. She is staying in the bottom of her cage and squaking out all the time.. If or when you go near her she tries to bite you .. Does anyone know what the problem could be or what I need to do..

How is her weight? Hopefully you weigh her on a gram scale periodically, otherwise you don't know what her weight is doing? If the number on the gram scale is dropping, then I'd be inclined to take her to the vet. If its stable or up a little bit, I'd almost bet she's getting ready to lay an egg. Make sure she is actually able to move around the cage okay and willing to eat. Change her cage papers every day and make sure her droppings are okay. Sometimes a female getting ready to lay an egg acts like a sick bird. They will hold their droppings for long periods of time like they would if incubating an egg and when they let loose its a nasty mess. If she's down there shredding a lot of paper and protecting one certain corner, I'd guess she's feeling nesty. Your vet is the best person to talk to because none of us can see her to know for sure. If you haven't seen it before, a sick bird can look an aweful lot like one getting ready to lay an egg and vice versa. If she's sitting on the bottom of the cage fluffed up and inactive for long periods of time, get her to a vet today.

Thankyou.. that was what I thought was going on she doesnt appear to be loosing weight but she is so moody you dont know weather or not to pet her or just speak and walk on..

Welcome to the forum:) I would just speak to her and not try to pet her while she is having a mood swing! It will save you from getting a nasty bite!

I would have her checked out by your vet...

Can you weigh her? That's really your best bet to tell wether she is sick or not, and if she is sick you need to take her to an avian vet ASAP because birds don't show real symptoms until the illness get really bad.

More than likely she has just matured and is going through her first hormonal issues. But I still suggest a visit to the avian vet. You can never be to careful. I couldn`t take losing Cameo because I didn`t get her to her vet when I should have.
