We had a terrible accident last night, my cockatiels leg got run over by a computer chair and it crushed his leg. We couldnā€™t get into an emergency vet until this morning. I checked the leg out last night and it was bleeding but quickly stopped and the leg was completely limp. We put in him a quarantine cage with a rolled up towel and he was eating a drinking. He refused to stand on or use the leg and just hopped around. We watched him all night and brought him to a vet right away this morning. The vet didnā€™t have an avian specialist in today so they just did a regular examination and told us that the leg has nerve damage and completely lost feeling. It doesnā€™t contract or flinch when you touch the foot like the other side does. They said we would most likely need an amputation but we need to wait to see our primary vet on Monday when they open. Iā€™m worried sick about my little guy. Does anyone have experience with a cockatiel losing a leg? Also recommendations on how to keep him comfortable until Monday?

If you search this site for ā€œhospital cageā€ you will find good directions and I donā€™t want to leave anything out. Basically you want to set up a small box or cage where he can sit on a padded surface, have food and water bowls on the floor with him, and heat source to save energy. Monday is a very long time away, there must be a certified avian vet nearby?

Thank you for the recommendations! Unfortunately I live in a state where avian vets are few and far between. Weā€™ve had our primary vet do a toe amputation in the past for another bird so we trust her 100% in that regard. Trust me if I didnā€™t have to wait until Monday I wouldnā€™t. Iā€™m very anxious about waiting but the vet I saw today told me that waiting will not cause further damage.

The link above might possible ferret out the name of a CAV (Certified Avian Vet) within reasonable distance. It would be good to have a backup to your regular vet just in case. And birds can do very well with just one leg.
