Molly and Bosley. They both left home and have partners now. Come back to feed sometimes. Just have Sonny an Ecky... more than enough
Interested to know if anyone else has an eclectus that likes coffee beans. Our bird Sonny wants to know whats going on around the place and a couple of months ago when I was grinding coffee beans he showed an interest so I gave him one and he ground it up and left it. But these days I give him 3 beans and there's nothing left. Maybe he shouldn't have any more than that I think. It doesn't seem to send him any more crazy than he normally is. He's also a bit of a meat lover, although we only have that when there are visitors who feed him.

Coffee is really dangerous for parrots. I am not sure if eclectus are different in some way, but I am guessing that they are not. The caffeine can cause serious heart problems, kidney failure etc (http://www.multiscope.com/hotspot/articles/caffeine.htm ). My uncle's Grey loved coffee too (he would try to sneak it) but it wasn't allowed because of the risk. Sorry to rain on your parade!!! Maybe there are similar bitter foods with a crunch that are safe?

Cranberry is safe and bitter and crunchy and safe abd birds are loving it!

yeah no, immediately stop feeding him the beans. Caffeine is extremely dangerous for most animals. Dogs, cats, and birds especially. Eclectus are unique in their digestive tracks but that just leaves them more prone to toxic foods, they are no exception.

Also maybe don't let your visitors feed him whatever they feel like feeding him. That's going to lead to a very sick bird.

Thanks for all the info. Coffee will now be denied. I'll grind the beans in the shed !!!!

Anything with caffeine (chocolate, drinks, etc)---that link I posted lists quite a few sources and the reasons why it is harmful.
This must be like parrot drugs lol. Yours isn't the only one the likes them...Just very bad for them lol.

Yes, he'll try anything. Never seen a bird like it. Loves food. Great bird though. Crazy flier too. Can get away from magpies when they chase him. Last week he went up about 1000ft and headed north, came back 9 hours later.

Have you considered decaf?

Just asking.

I don't know if this was meant to be serious, lol, but just in case it was supposed to be serious, caffeine is not the only substance in coffee beans that is deadly to birds...Coffee also contains Theobromine, Theophylline, Paraxanthine, etc., all of which are stimulants and can be fatal to birds, dogs, etc., just like chocolate...So coffee beans are a huge no-no! I am guilty of giving my buys a little tiny taste of something chocolate once in a while, like when I'm eating a cookie or a piece of cake that has chocolate in it, or maybe a tiny bit of ice cream, but it's very infrequent and just a taste...Actually chewing-up and eating a coffee bean is a whole other thing...

It was a joke Ellen.
But I do appreciate the info.:D

sorry... WHAT!? You just let him loose on the world? Do you not think about predators? Getting lost? Getting stolen? Getting 'rescued' by someone thinking he's lost? "Came back 9 hours later" so you just let him off into the world and didn't bother for 9 hours to think 'hey, my pet bird who is a prey species not endemic to my locale has been gone for an entire day, I wonder if he's still alive or even knows how to get back home'?

On another note it doesn't look like for a second you've understood that those things you're feeding him could easily kill him at a moment's notice?

I'm hoping this is some sort of troll post because I've never heard such irresponsible behavior

LOL maybe the parrot is not the only one in that house that chews on coffebeans and other 'interesting' substances? ;)

I would love to have a free-range parrot though, but they would be killed (cats) or stolen and locked up (humans) within minutes here.

I seriously didn't know if it was or not!!! There are decaf coffee beans, so that's not a bad suggestion at all!!!

I hadn't really paid much attention to what else the OP had said, only about the eating whole coffee beans, lol...Maybe they free-fly their bird and it took-off? Most people who free-fly do lose their birds at some point, most people more than once or twice....I'm looking for a rational explanation for letting your pet bird outside to fly freely...

Ya missed that too! Look at parrot tag, says lorikeet fly fry come back and visit, so don't know if they were the wild native ones, or if they were captive bred then released?! I'm sure there are snakes in Australia that eat birds.... .

I thought you said decaf beans tsill contained substances that strained the kidneys etc...I am confused now.
I was under the impression that caffeine wasn't the only reason to avoid them, and I thought you were too, but now this confuses me lol.

I think she just meant it wasn't a bad suggestion... if one didn't know of all the other substances within a coffee bean that might cause harm.
