Coloring wood

Hi,

I searched for my topic but didn't find anything, my apologies if I missed it.

I'm wondering what safe methods there are of dying wood for my Olly's toys. He loves chunks of wood with holes drilled in, but he also likes his colorful toys..

I wouldn't know where to start!
