I’ve always been told boy and our vet never questioned it or the not bright blue cere, but I’ve always kind of wondered… boy or girl? No eggs have ever been laid and he usually has some blue in his cere.

I had a budgie with that dark blue feather coloration. His cere was dark blue once he got to be an adult. Your bird is three years old and cere is light brown. I think this is a female budgie.

Ah. That’s what I’ve been thinking for a bit but never really accepting. It’s a big shock to finally hear, but I love my handsome/beautiful girl regardless. Thanks for the input :)

If she gets confused (or stimulated into breeding condition) and decides to lay eggs her cere will probably get to be a darker brown. But you don’t want that as it’s hard on their bodies.

How can I prevent that? If you have any resources I’d be more than happy to read up. It has always made me so nervous so I was relieved thinking I wouldn’t have to deal with that stress πŸ˜… I avoid happy huts and enclosed nest like areas for hormones in general.

Also keep her away from shreddable things like paper. I have always had to keep my girl birds in cages with grates because otherwise they make a newspaper nest.

Yup, she's a girl. Pink and/or dark blue mean boys, brown and/or light blue mean girls! I currently have one boy with a blue cere, one with a pink cere, and one girl with a blue cere, one with a peeling brown cere, so I can confirm that this is true!
