Every night when I go to sleep, Peeko starts throwing a fit. It starts off as pathetic sounding "crying", and then progresses to angry chatter and screeching. Someone suggested that I set up a small "nighttime" cage next to my bed so that he doesn't feel alone and vulnerable, which is what they think causes the outbursts. My (very opinionated) mother thinks this is a very bad idea, and it would be a mistake to "give in to his tantrums".

Since I don't know much about the subject, I was hoping to hear from parronts that have used, or still use a separate cage for sleeping. For those who use them, what are the pros/cons? What is everyone's opinion on this in general?

I've used one in the past for Charlie, but haven't recently. It previously allowed him more sleep (and I), and he loved the smaller carrier/cage. I stopped using the day/night cage thing when I moved. He doesn't seem to care one way or the other as he still hates being "alone" at night. But then, if it was up to him, he'd never go to sleep! LOL

If I were to move him again, we would go back to the night/day cage idea to ensure that he would be getting an adequate amount of sleep.

I'd say to try it and give it a shot. It might help! If not, well, at least you tried it.

Does your guy have one of those happy huts or whatever brand name they call them? Token has always slept in his usual big cage, uncovered but goes in his little furry hut that I hang high in the corner. He seems very snuggly and content in there. Just a thought. Fyi...check them regularly for loose strings, i know people talk of their birds destroying them. Token loves his too much...he wont even eat a treat in there.

Peeko does have a happy hut - he too treats his like gold and doesn't try to destroy it. :)

I might end up trying this. I have a smaller cage I could use already, so its not like it would be any extra expense. My mother is just so against the idea that I wondered if there were any major cons to it..

Ive been tempted to try this too.
My guys are all in the livingroom. We cover them at 9:00 but they wont go to sleep till the lights go out.And we get up at 5ish so when the light comes on they wake up anyway, covered or not. Thats only about 8 hrs of sleep.
The tiels sleep when covered and stay asleep till 8 or so when uncovered(so they get enough sleep)

I don't think there are any major points against it. Whatever works best is fine, I think. Gilbert sleeps in his normal cage and has never had a problem with it, but he also has a small cage for when we go away, and he sleeps fine in that (one night he slept in my room in it, and he was totally fine).
Give it a try and see if it works. If so, you found a new routine. :)

Well Peeko spent his first night in his potential nighttime cage last night. Its on my nightstand, right next to my bed. For the first time since I've had him, Peeko went to sleep with no fussing of any sort at all when bedtime came. I think I've found & solved the problem...And here we thought he was afraid of the dark! He just didn't like being alone at night.
